Re: Game of Thrones

I think book greyjoys are largely a bore Indeed. I think Dorne suffered the most - and they were a bore in the books, too. Just not as big a disaster as the iron islands The effect of the Dorne stuff is still ongoing. The Dorne storyline is clearly meeting up with the "Young Griff" a.k.a....

Re: Game of Thrones

Book Euron is waaaay cooler and more mysterious. He's basically a smarter and more sadistic Cersei. He's cunning, suave, and a master manipulator with absolutely no moral grounding whatsoever. In his mysterious voyages afar, he has acquired a six foot long dragon horn banded with Valyrian Steel and ...

Re: Game of Thrones

I'm starting to think they are setting up Dany for the fall. They continuously contrast her with Jon in the show and it's usually not a flattering look for her. She believes she deserves the throne because of who she is and the dragons. She's a conqueror not a leader. They have chipped away at the ...

Re: Audiobooks

Gone Girl was a solid audiobook. That said, it is literally the only audiobook I've ever listened to, so I don't have a lot to compare it to. My wife does audiobooks all the time, but I can't seem to find any interest in them. I'm not a multi-tasker, so it would really only work for me in the car. ...

Re: General Chit-Chat thread

I've finally realized that making your social media incredibly boring is the secret to happiness and productivity. So much of Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit is just outrage-porn. And that's how they hack your attention. You get an immediate visceral reaction when you see those posts, and your brain k...

1.) Jason Heyward is nearly as good as Bryce Harper this season. 2.) Javy struggles out of the gate and tries way too hard to bring his season averages up, causing a prolonged slump. He ends up around 1.5 fWAR. 3.) Bryant rebounds and posts a near-MVP season. 4.) Cole Hamels posts an ERA over 4. 5.)...

I grabbed the new expansion for Civilization 6 yesterday. Won a diplomatic game as Sweden. I'm not entirely sure why they removed the diplomacy victory condition from the base game, but it sure is nice to have it back. I'm not sold on the fun of the climate change mechanic -- it tends to just get me...

One of my coworkers has decided that I'm just too smart to not be a Republican, so she keeps bringing me her mailers from Judicial Watch and trying to get me to read them.

It would be easier to ignore it, but I'm reading them all and then breaking down for her how ridiculous they all are.

That is a prime example of giving away entirely too much in the trailer. It should've stopped about 30-40 seconds in.

2019 can horsefeathers right off already. This might be the most angry I have ever been at a news story: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ellievhall/woman-vegetative-state-birth-phoenix-arizona-investigation Thanks for posting that. I've finally had a break in my work, school, and parenting schedules that has allowed me to read some books over the last few weeks. My thoughts: Fear: Trump in the Whitehouse , by Bob Woodward - I'd started on this back when it came out in September and just kinda petered out. It's a frightening bo...

Yeah, Russell needs to go. Yesterday.

I'm so sick and tired of seeing the Cubs walk down this ugly path. Ever since they brought Aroldis Chapman in, this team has become harder and harder to cheer for.

Speaking of dead folks, where is Sully? He was last active in Sept 2018 b& I really don't get the point of that. At this point, the board is essentially just a few dozen old-timers who have been dealing with each others insanity for more than a decade. Might as well just let these relationships...

I wouldn't be shocked if we signed Harper, but the "everything is secret good news, 15th degree underwater chess" explanations for every piece of bad news are annoying. I certainly wasn't espousing my belief that everything is secret good news --just that I refuse to get worked up over re...

Their interest in Lester was wide-open and public so long before he hit FA that it was basically tampering The Lester thing is clearly different. The Cubs were coming off a 73-89 season and had almost no big-league talent. This was not an organization that people were going to want to come to for r...

Meh, I'm still not putting much stock in all the media reports. If Harper wants to be here (and it certainly seems that he does), it makes a lot of sense for the front office to act poor and hope he'll lower his demands to make it work. I refuse to get outraged when everybody is doing exactly what I...

I’d love some Tulowitzki to the Cubs on a bounceback deal It's not really a bounceback deal. The Blue Jays are eating his entire salary. Wherever he signs, it will be for the $500k league minimum with the Blue Jays making up the rest for the next two years. So it's more a question of what team offe...
