Re: Food Monstrosities

I honestly had no clue that the Cheesecake Factory serves food other than dessert-type stuff. Huh.

This is infuriating:

Bobby Hadid joined the N.Y.P.D. after 9/11, to protect his new country. But when he questioned the force’s tactics, his life began to erode.

WW2 is essential to IB; it can't exist without it. The latter is incidental window-dressing to Ravenous.

Between Ravenous, The Proposition and Brimstone, I'm genuinely surprised Guy Pearce didn't also somehow manage to end up in Bone Tomahawk.

They're both great, IMO, but IB manages to have 3 of some of the greatest scenes of all time in any movie, so I gotta give it the edge. I mean, the bar scene alone beats maybe a good 90% of any other movie ever in their entirety. First scene, bar scene, and... https://youtu.be/09nHj9Qd6k0 And, as a...

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel

Well, no, because Inglourious Basterds exists (yes, it's still a WW2 movie) and is better than both of those, but I can also only think of, like, 3 other American WW2 movies in that timeframe besides the ones already mentioned. Inglorious Basterds isn't really a WWII movie in the traditional sense....

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel

I've seen every other film the guy has made; his bag of tricks is old hat, and all of the talk of the film makes it very clear he just goes back to the exact same wells. There's a common through-line in most of the reviews that conflates enduring a brutal prestige film as somehow relative to its qua...

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel

I was thinking more in the grand scheme of things. Gibson made one of the most profitable films of the aughts, was an Academy Award winner and big box office draw and we all know how Hollywood loves a good comeback story (INB4 Parks and Rec reference). Combine that with someone probably greasing so...

I'm not even that big a Nolan fan, but I loved Dunkirk , and it's an added bonus that it kinda sticks all up in the face of a dumb dildo like Gibson as to how you can make a genuinely great and affecting and damned heroic war film without jerking off over the idea of a screen soaked in viscera and ...

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel

For Gibson, I suppose since his scandals were strictly verbal (yelling at Cops, vile phone calls with his wife) his situation for Hollywood was a "Time heals all wounds" scenario. As horsefeathers as that is, I have to assume that's why he's back. That's the part I can't wrap my head arou...
