Re: 2020 Offseason Thread

I think I would not be surprised by anything this offseason. Heck, it starts with this Epstein/Ricketts meeting. Would it be absolutely stunning if both guys decided that his run was done and mutually split? I wouldn't be shocked. The organization is bogged down. In some respects, it happened quick....

Re: 2020 Trade Deadline Targets/Rumors

I'm trying to recall why Taylor Trammell was hyped. He's not particularly young, more gap power. Production since his run in A ball has been okay but not great. I saw fangraphs Brett Gardner comp ... and Gardner is a fine player, but those guys, you are happy with their career when it ends, but you ...

Re: How do you fix the Cubs?

I think you sort of play out the string. There's justifications to go all sorts of ways (being hyper-aggressive for one last run, tanking and selling for a new cycle), but I think the least exciting route might simply be the most prudent route. You let this core play out the string. Hey, if someone ...

Re: 2020 Trade Deadline Targets/Rumors

I'm mildly curious why the Angels are betting on Barreto. I mean, I get it, you still hold some intrigue about a guy who was as touted as Barreto was, considering he is only 24, but I probably would've gone after some young arm gambles if the intent was to be competitive soon, and use money to purch...

Re: 2021 Draft Thread

I have big hopes for UVA's 2021 season, and UVA draft potential for 2021 ... but I have my doubts as well. Vasil and McGarry both have big time stuff, but the consistency and command has never been there. McGarry's mechanics can be a mess at times and helped contribute to his problems, and you just ...

Mildly curious how high on the radar some of these guys were and where they would've gone in a longer draft.

Re: 2020 MLB Actual Draft Day(s) Thread

The few mocks that I occasionally checked in on initially had Ed Howard going ahead of us. I don't really think I anticipated Howard sliding to us.

Re: Minor League Musings

I wonder about how teams go about mixing these taxi squads together. You certainly want guys that you can plug in, but I imagine they might also keep some top prospects active so as to get them some extra work. Don't know ... have they discussed rules on whether or not the taxi squad can be changed ...

Re: 2020 MLB Actual Draft Day(s) Thread

Orioles are paying a ton of money on Coby Mayo. I'm a bit surprised how much they are paying him, but it's a product of situation as much as anything. I was excited about Bitsko more because he was a UVA signee (glad Teel dropped out of the draft), but honestly, guys like Moreno and Baumler are stil...

Re: 2020 MLB Actual Draft Day(s) Thread

I do like the 5 round draft a lot more than I thought I would. If MLB ever hopes of making the draft a big thing (it'll never be as big as the NBA or NFL draft as college and prep baseball aren't followed as heavily as CBB and CFB), the shorter draft does help as the focus is more on college guys t...

Re: 2020 MLB Actual Draft Day(s) Thread

Assuming they sign everyone I horsefeathering love this draft Hope you are right. I love Howard, so if he pans out, that's all that will really matter. I like Carraway just fine, although the idea that he's safe overshadows that there's still some risk on him developing into a top late inning arm. ...

Re: 2020 MLB Actual Draft Day(s) Thread

I don't think either Swiney or Logan Allen are particularly safe, Daniel Cabrera or Andrew Abbott/Burl Carraway are more along the lines of safe. Think they should go for an overslot, not sure Howard gets above so there might be wiggle room in the 2nd...Convince Jared Kelley, somehow! Abbott seems ...

Re: 2020 MLB Actual Draft Day(s) Thread

Well I still don’t think the Kjerstad pick made sense, but now with Bitsko off the table, I’m curious what picks 30 and 39 are going to look like for BAL. Jared Kelley is still on board. I could see guys like Cade Horton or Carson Montgomery in the mix - both have commitments that could require big...

Re: 2020 MLB Actual Draft Day(s) Thread

Seems like a good kid with loads of potential. Where does he rank in the system? I'd put him behind Davis, Hoerner, Marquez and Amaya and would probably put him behind Hernandez when Christian signs. But those first four guys are generally (but not universally) considered top 100 prospects. I reall...

Re: 2020 MLB Actual Draft Day(s) Thread

I am immensely pleased with this pick. Arguably, this might be the most intrigued and excited I've been about a pick in ... a long time, considering the state of the ML team, the state of the system. It's a high upside pick up the middle, in a draft where there will be pitching options later. I gott...

It's a devastating group, if they all develop. I wonder what the plan with Martin is ... I'm thinking long range 3rd. That said, they probably didn't expect him there.

Re: 2020 MLB Actual Draft Day(s) Thread

I expect Baltimore is just saving money to go overslot later. But I don’t trust Miami to not be pinching pennies. The one thing I'll say on that Meyer pick is that he sort of seems to fit the mold of athletic arms that they've tried to go after. It's entirely possible that they are pinching pennies...

Re: 2020 MLB Actual Draft Day(s) Thread

Honestly, I'd love a Bitsko gamble, as much as a part of me hopes he somehow slips out of the first round and heads to UVA. That said, I'm not really expecting it. Don't know if I really buy this sudden switch to HS picks, particularly this year. Also, I don't recall Kantrovitz's run in St. Louis as...

Re: 2020 MLB Actual Draft Day(s) Thread

Garrett Mitchell’s junior year fall reminds me of Trea Turner’s. Both were well regarded, athletic prospects who fell due to injury/health issues and swing concerns. No one knew what Trea Turner's ultimate position was going to be and most scouts had doubts he could stick at SS. Yeah, some similari...

Re: Offseason Top Prospect Lists

https://twitter.com/kileymcd/status/1242073962101772289 Kiley has the Cubs' farm system ranked 24th. I think the system will move up in the rankings next year even with Nico Hoerner and Adbert Alzolay graduating off the list. This is assuming the draft and IFA signing period continue like normal th...

Re: College Baseball (Multiple Seasons)

Been a couple seasons since I could really get excited about UVA baseball, or at least intrigued. Lost the season opening series to Oklahoma, but a nice homestand has given me some hope. The down last two years have been for a variety of reasons, including the loss of some impact talent to the draft...

Re: Mookie Betts and David Price Traded to the Dodgers

So I have a totally "weird" thought about the revised trade ... I think the Red Sox did better ... AND I think the Dodgers did better. I think the only loser is whatever reason that Angels/Dodgers trade fell through. The Twins part is fine - solid starting pitching arm for a team trying to...

Re: Kipnis to Cubs Minor League/NRI Contract

I like it. Hey, it's a Minor League/NRI. Not that it means much, but he is a lifelong Cubs fan. He's definitely slowing down, but I wonder if he just needed time to heal and readjust. He was banged up a few years back, and IIRC, vaguely remember articles or chatter on blogs about his swing being out...
