Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-21-17

Hudson goes 6 6 1 1 2 2, with 10/3 GO/FO. He's been extremely good outside that first outing. Really wish we'd hear some sort of report on his stuff. First 2 outings, but your point remains. 22 IP, 17 H, 4 R, 13/8 K/BB, 0 HR his last 4 starts. Even that first outing wasn't that bad. Not great, but ...

Eh ... 22 innings of work, albeit excellent work ... if they decide to move him up, great, but I'm perfectly fine leaving Torrez at AA.

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-21-17

Good for Latin Jeff Cirillo, he's had a good month of hitting for power I admit, I might be missing some jokes these days, as I'm not around as much, so if this is some joke, I apologize, but ... peak Jeff Cirillo, in his early Brewers days, off the top, was a really good player, and Gleyber looks ...

Clifton: 6.2 IP / 2 Ks / 2 BBs/ 3 Hs / 2 HBPs and a WP / 8:6 GO/AO Now here's a kid that's easy to get excited about, and someone who is a testament to the teaching in the system building and developing an arm, as by most accounts, he's physically matured and gotten better. It's been a fairly excit...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-19-17

Tom's not impressed when's de la Cruz is economical and gets through 7 because he only has a strikeout. He's not impressed with 5 Ks in 5.1 because he runs out of gas in the 6th. Shrug indeed. Does it even matter that I've singled out the HR multiple times as what drags down the outing? That makes ...

Re: The Starting Pitching Trade Candidates

See, I would challenge both of you on that notion. This isn't to say that I think either of those ideas would happen. That said, certainly, Theo Epstein/Jed Hoyer haven't shied away from a deal if they felt it benefited their club. I mean, one only has to look at the Nomar trade they made with the C...

Re: The Starting Pitching Trade Candidates

I don't believe he's been mentioned but something I'm keeping an eye out on are the Nationals. With Erick Fedde looking like he could jump to the bigs this year, plus their desperate need for pen help and the high price that the White Sox have placed on Robertson, I do wonder if there's some sort of...

Re: Szczur DFA; Zastryzny called up

I like Szczur, but really not surprised at the middling return. Every organization has Szczur type players. These decent defensive OF's that have some ability to be good role players/bench guys. There's always a mild tendency to over-value these guys, including by myself, within one team's one fan b...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-5-17

On Vosler ... it really comes down to how much of this power development is real. The most likely guess/outcome is that this is a flash-in-the-pan, like davell said, his one shining moment. If this power holds, though ... and that's a big IF ... I could see him worm his way into being say, the numbe...

Going to be mildly surprised if the Keys/Pelicans game gets going. Was gonna head on over to Harry Grove, but weather calls for rain, and it's been sprinkling/drizzling in the area already.

Re: 2017 Draft Thread

I've actually been somewhat stunned at Adam Haseley's meteoric rise up the charts. At one point last year, I really wondered if he would be a better pitcher than a hitter, but now, he's supposed to be the top college OF? I get why (the numbers are stunning this year, but most importantly, the power ...

Re: Cubs Offseason Top Prospects Lists (BA, BP, Sickels, etc)

I agree with Raisin that Callis is still probably the best, at least, as it pertains to Cubs lists. I like that list at first glance ... no real quibbles. Kinda surprised how low these guys are: 22. Alec Mills 23. Rob Zastryzny 24. Pierce Johnson 25. Bryan Hudson 26. Jacob Hannemann 27. Ryan William...

Re: Cubs Offseason Top Prospects Lists (BA, BP, Sickels, etc)

It is, admittedly, an odd list. I'm actually okay with no Pena - by most accounts that I saw, it's pretty much average stuff across the board, so okay. Even if you think that the Rosario reports were over-hyped ... it seems far more likely as of right now that he has a better shot of doing something...

Re: Cubs Offseason Top Prospects Lists (BA, BP, Sickels, etc)

BA has Cease at 97, Almora at 64, Happ at 63, and Eloy at 14. I don't have a problem with any of the Cubs placings ... but boy ... that top of the list ... maybe it's just a weaker year for the farm overall ... I like Gleyber a lot ... but ... he's the 5th best prospect in baseball right now? Can't...

Re: Cubs Offseason Top Prospects Lists (BA, BP, Sickels, etc)

So I live in Frederick, MD, which is where the Orioles' A+ team plays. I can get a ticket package deal where I pick and choose 10 home games to go see. Realistically, I'm mostly interested in seeing Eloy when the MB Pelicans are in town, which happens 10 times this season. Is it worth it to get the...

Re: Cubs acquire former top prospect Eddie Butler

I'm still intrigued by Eddie Butler. I don't expect much from him, but considering what we gave up, a heck of a gamble. Fastball/Slider still seem to be there. Honestly, ending up with Brett Anderson and Eddie Butler far exceeded my hopes of about a month ago. I thought we were going to have to wait...

I'm still hoping for Teheran plus one of Newcomb/Allard/Muller/Wentz with the Braves. I lean Newcomb and Muller most. Newcomb because he has the tools to start or be a fireman kind of reliever with the heathy arm and swing and miss stuff. Muller's my early sleeper of the Allard/Wentz/Muller trio be...

Re: Cubs offseason thread

I think Freeland could likely be had, and he'd be a nice guy to add, for a reasonable price as depth. I think that's the type of guy that could perhaps be had for a pen arm - an end of the rotation guy who could be stashed in AAA. I don't see the Rockies moving Hoffman in general, but if they do con...

Re: Cubs offseason thread

If Jose Rosario's stuff is anywhere near as good, next year, as some of the reports that have come out about him, I'd be a bit surprised if he can't find a way to sneak onto the late inning bullpen mix. If that slider is steady ... and he's hitting triple digits ... Hard pressed for me to buy Corey ...

Re: Random Offseason Musings and Rumors

Seems so weird to think that Cahill was once so highly valued. He'll be a nice swing man for them. The Mariners offseason has been interesting, to say the least. Almost all the moves could be criticized individually, but I can't help but look at the end product and think ... it might be a better squ...

Re: Depth for the Rotation

The Ross decision is certainly a disappointment. At this juncture, I'm more inclined to think that we are looking at a depth type signing, at best, a Travis Wood type signing, and waiting on how rotations shake out. I'm not inclined to really believe that any trade of any minor significance is likel...

Almost everyone possible has been mentioned, so I'll go off the board a bit to throw two names out there ... two names I'm not even certain will be with the Cubs when the season starts. Jesse Hodges - I remember reading about him being signed way back ago, and it feels like he's been around forever....

Re: Who Will Be The Cubs Next Top 25 Prospect?

With the de la Cruz reports, it really comes down to, I guess, the changeup. Off the top, the most pessimistic report I saw on him was a BP thing where they still slapped possible future 60's on his fastball/curveball, but they slapped a very low grade on the changeup. By most accounts, that changeu...

Re: Who Will Be The Cubs Next Top 25 Prospect?

As for Otani ... I'd love to get him, obviously, but my betting money would be on the Yankees. They have a strong presence in Japan, but leaving all that aside, they have a desperate need for pitching and likely the ability to trade for more bonus pool money (iirc, you can trade up to 75% of the poo...
