Re: Hosmer to the Padres - 8 Years $144M

I guess this is their version of Gil Meche (when he signed with the Royals) or Jayson Werth (with the Nationals). It's a "we're close" move at a decent enough price. They are close ... their assets coming up could form a strong foundational core in the next year or two, and the team in of ...

Re: Darvish to Cubs, 6/$126 Million + Incentives

Dunno who that High Heat guy is, but on the Brewers staff: a) Yes, you can conceivably make an argument for almost all those things. Zach Davies could put it together and be a ... Hendricks-type of starter and show that level of consistency. Arrieta had his Cy Young year and you could conceivably bu...

Re: Darvish to Cubs, 6/$126 Million + Incentives

I'm surprised at the news of how lackluster his market seemed. Yeah, there are concerns about Darvish, but he was still a top pitcher. I'm just thoroughly surprised that, beyond the Brewers and Twins, it seemed iike (outside of the Heyman report) that few other teams even came close to the Cubs numb...

Re: The Yu Darvish Thread

If the Brewers pull off an Archer trade ... I've got to think the deal probably starts with Josh Hader. I guess I could squint and see something with Luis Ortiz in it as well. One of those two pitchers almost has to be involved, IMO. They do have the pieces to pull off a "respectable" trad...

Re: Yelich to Brewers (Rosenthal)

It's a good combination of moves for the Brewers, and the package given for Yelich isn't that bad. Harrison might've broken out ... but is still risky, and Isen Diaz ... you gotta buy the bat developing a lot. It's easy to see why the Marlins would take this - they've got some pitching in their syst...

Re: The Yu Darvish Thread

So ... my view on the Brewers system is that it's really a lot of untapped potential in some key areas, but it hasn't popped, and for specific guys, it's fair to question if it will pop. I mean, top picks Corey Ray and Trent Grisham have never gotten it going yet, and Nate Kirby has been hurt ... bu...

Re: Starting Pitching candidates

I'm a bit surprised that the rough idea of 4/60 or 5/75 or so for Cobb seems to be something that's too high for teams. I think I'd be fine with a straight 4/60 for Cobb, but it sure looks like the market is going to be a lot more down than it seems (certainly, part of it may be that there are still...

Re: Christian Yelich

With the way their roster is set, I keep thinking that something involving Baez is the most likely way to pry Yelich loose, but if their starting price for the Braves started with Acuna, it doesn't seem like a Yelich move anytime soon is likely.

Re: The Yu Darvish Thread

We're doing that thing again where we really underestimate how bad opt-outs are for the team and how good they are for the player. I don't know about anyone else, but yeah, certainly opt outs tend to favor the player. I'm not too keen on long term deals with arms, and I doubt we're going to get ano...

Re: The Yu Darvish Thread

It wouldn't surprise me if Darvish's market was coming down, but as good/shrewd as Cashman has been of late, I tend to think that low is a bit wishful thinking on his part. I mean, the thing is, if it drops near that low, you'd likely get a lot of teams in on the bidding. At those numbers, the Twins...

Re: McCutchen to the Giants

Okay, color me surprised at so many people thinking it's a crap return for McCutchen. What did people expect for him? I mean, relatively speaking, I think the Gerrit Cole trade was a worse return, and that one was probably passable (although most reviews paint it as a general negative, which I buy)....

Re: McCutchen to the Giants

For one year of McCutchen, that's a pretty decent return. I'm not much for Crick ... I think he could make a decent power arm in time, and perhaps has late inning potential, but I don't buy him as a starter. Reynolds is one of those guys for a rebuilding team, it's fine. He's not great in any areas,...

Ah forgot about that. Rodney probably isn't the best bet to keep the closer's job all year, but it does make Reed's decision a bit more interesting.

Re: Offseason Transactions

Twins have enough room that with a creative contract structure, they can be in the deep end if they want to. I mean, almost all their costliest contracts end in the next year or two - Mauer/Dozier after 18, Castro/Hughes/Santana after 19 (and they could certainly make sure Santana doesn't hit his 20...

Re: Starting Pitching candidates

I don't particularly love the Cole deal for the Pirates, but it's not bad. Really comes down to buying Joe Musgrove. If you buy him getting a bit better and hitting the start of his peak, then, really, that alone could make this a good trade. The addition of Colin Moran gives them a guy to slot at 3...

Re: The Alex Cobb Thread

I would point out that the parts besides the rotation, their hope would be to supplement it through a fairly strong system. They have an abundance of quality OF prospects (obviously, Robles tops the list, and Soto gets talked about ad nauseum now it seems, but one of my favorite sleepers is Daniel j...

Re: Cubs Offseason Rumors

Lord, even the dumb jerk Bears are moving faster than the Cubs this offseason. Might be evidence that moving faster isn't always better. I like the Nagy hire for the Bears. I'm not huge on Ryan Pace's moves so far, but I think Nagy is a nice, young offensive mind who should bring in an aggressive, ...

Re: The Alex Cobb Thread

How many teams, regardless of the pitcher, are interested in giving out a 17+ million AAV to a SP this offseason? The Cubs and Twins seem like the only teams really interested in playing in those waters, with Houston, Texas, St. Louis, and Milwaukee playing coy about it. And those maybe teams are p...

Re: Starting Pitching candidates

Honestly, at this point, it's just wait out the market. If Cobb is asking 4/70 (honestly, I'm not that averse to that if that was the proposed endgame several months ago, but he'll probably come down now), we might as well just wait. 3/42 was never going to get Cobb, and I hate the idea of 4 with 25...

Re: Wade Davis Signs with the Rockies, 3/$52 M

He's probably at the tail end of his prime years, but with surgery the way it is these days, plus the lost years ... it's sort of a crap shoot. Typically, in the past, early 30's, to the best of my recollection, was the end of the prime years for starting pitchers. You have a good point on Cole hold...

Re: Wade Davis Signs with the Rockies, 3/$52 M

Good for Davis. I wouldn't want to give him that deal, but I'm also of the opinion that with Wade, 3 years is fine, and he might end up being worth it. Such a slow moving market. Seems like the SP market is waiting for Darvish ... or maybe even waiting on Cobb, since there are some teams that probab...

Re: Starting Pitching candidates

A bit curious who the Giants are clearing salary space for. ___ As for our rotation, the thing to be said is that this market has moved fairly slowly. I don't think the organization would be that upset if they ended up tossing out fliers for that 5th spot, but I do think they are gunning for somethi...

Re: THE Bryce Harper in 2018 Thread

I wouldn't read too much into the rhetoric about letting things play out until after 2018. If I recall correctly, there was similar talk about letting Strasburg hit FA before they revisited. The Nationals front office, though, to put it bluntly ... they aren't the Orioles front office. I'd love Harp...

Re: Phillies make a Smooth deal

Seems like a weird signing for an NL team that already has Rhys Hoskins. I wonder if he'd be in a Machado trade? A bit unlikely unless the Orioles can clear out Davis/Trumbo/Mancini from their 1st/LF/DH logjam. _______ I find this signing a bit odd. Hoskins can be decent in LF, but Santana at 3 yea...
