Re: Hosmer to the Padres - 8 Years $144M

Signing some combination of Lomo/Lind/Carter/Bautista for a 1B platoon probably gets you as much, if not more, in season value for 1/10 the overall price and gives you much more flexibility. This is dumb anyway you look at it. Also saw this guy on twitter last night and thought these were good poin...

Re: Hosmer to the Padres - 8 Years $144M

This signing is so weird. It requires you to make three pretty big assumptions. 1. He is legitimately good, and this being 'bad every other year' nonsense he's done for most of his career is done. 2. They're much further along than it looks like from the outside. In my opinion, buying a guy a year ...

I'm not sure if they'll use it for the starters, but I can see the Cubs rotating relievers through the 10 day DL so they can keep all the guys who are out of options.

Re: Offseason Transactions

Others are saying it's a minor league deal that could pay him $750000 if he makes the majors. here's what is on MLB Trade Rumors: The Cubs have signed righty Shae Simmons to a split contract, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports (Twitter links). The deal will pay Simmons $750K if he cracks Chicago’s...

Or Carlos Martinez, who I love.

Re: Offseason Transactions

The Cardinals signing Bud “too many foreign players in MLB” Norris right after the Cubs signing Darvish is just to easy to even make jokes about. No it’s not. Please make many jokes and let’s have general jocularity about the event. meh - it would work better if they didn't have Kolten Wong and Tom...

Re: NL Central Also-Rans: Reds, Brewers, Pirates

Question: Why did the brewers prioritize spending big on Cain when they already had Yelich, Santana & Braun? Given the state of their rotation, shouldn't they have allocated those funds towards pitching? When you look at only ERA for one guy, only FIP for another guy, only win total for a third...

Re: Darvish to Cubs, 6/$126 Million + Incentives

i’m going to go out on a limb and say the contract we asked arrieta if he’d accept was similar to the darvish deal in that it was on that would allow him to play major league baseball. no way did we offer arrieta something comparable to this and double no way would he have turned it down. I hope th...

Re: General Baseball Chit-Chat Thread

I do not recall him ever being more valuable than B. Harper? When was that? S. Castro was pretty valuable after his 2011-12 seasons, and then had a bad year in 2013. He bounced back in 2014, but missed some time due to injuries. Then it was pretty much downhill from there... I don't specifically re...

Re: Darvish to Cubs, 6/$126 Million + Incentives

A thing I've wondered in the past, would it be weird to go 6 man rotation most of the season? Or rotate Monty and Chatwood out of the 5th spot? I really hope they do something along these lines to give Darvish and Lester as much extra time off between starts as they can. yeah, agreed. would it make...

My God just look at our freaking roster. Yeah, just median projections after some down years last year and we are clear, easy favorites in the division. If we get growth from guys like Russell, Schwarbs and Javy...good god. If we get that and bounce backs from Zobrist and Heyward, we could set reco...

Re: 2018 rotation

More than the sequence of the pitchers, I'm curious about how they'll manage usage. Chatwood is an extreme injury risk, Darvish a moderate injury risk and Lester is aging. I wonder if they go to a quasi-6 man rotation or if they play DL shenanigans during the season. Especially in the second half if...
