Re: Orioles are shopping Machado (and he wants to go back to SS)

This is going to sound worse than I mean it, but what problem does Machado solve? He likely gives you plus defense at SS, but the Cubs get less marginal benefit from that than maybe any team in recent memory. He should be a good hitter(elite for his position), which is an improvement. But he hasn't...

Re: Politics & Current Events

And that had nothing to do with the tax bill No, you're right. His hollow, grandstanding, principled stance should be applauded and completely removed from the fact that he's a steaming pile of sleeze willing to vote for a bill like this. I never said he should be applauded, in fact I said he shoul...

Re: Starting Pitching candidates

They could also be leaking this to help with Archer/Salazar talks. I certainly wouldn't be against a Darvish signing. He's a hell of a pitcher. I hope the contract doesn't get that ridiculous, of course. But he makes this rotation damn solid if he's healthy. Essentially, they could sign a backup ca...

Re: Starting Pitching candidates

I think it'll go over 40 personally. But, its not just Smyly and his 5, its Chatwood and his 12.7 too. To me, it'd seem more realistic to have found a Corbin or something like that, on a smaller trade, to fill that 5th spot and save the added money for next year. Smyly's contract is no greater than...

Re: Starting Pitching candidates

I'd be shocked. If we did this, it'd be hard to explain Chatwood and Smyly on the books next year. The LT isn't an issue this year. But, staying under 245 next year, if you've got Darvish and Harper certainly could be. You aren't going to limit yourself to injury rehabs and rentals for this last ro...

Re: The Mock Off Season Thread

You donating the NSBB domain squatting profits to the Ricketts to make such moves possible, Tim? The 2018 salary wouldn't be that bad, tbh. I'm pretty sure that's under the luxury tax (but without room for midseason moves). It's the 2019 re-signing Machado and also adding Harper that just can't hap...

Re: The Mock Off Season Thread

Let's push some chips to the middle... - Any two pitching prospects in our system plus Ademan and the rights to Araujo for Machado. -- obviously a short term move, but gives us the option of retaining Machado or signing Harper next offseason - Russell + stuff for Archer -- I hate losing Russell, but...

Re: Cubs Sign Reliever Steve Cishek

This is a solid move, imo. Really nice 4th or 5th best reliever, he’s more than you can ask for in that spot. 4th or 5th? Morrow, Strop and Carl are all easily better. Monty may even rank ahead of him for me/some and if Wilson decides not to be a bum he could be better. All those guys would comfort...

Re: Cubs Sign Reliever Steve Cishek

I woke up and saw this and was pretty underwhelmed, but I think that's because I hadn't looked at Cishek all that closely. He's been really effective the last 2 years, and getting back to the NL should only help more. I'm still a little bummed that it likely means they aren't getting something else...

Re: Bullpen Options

I'm confused by all the hate for Kintzler. Is everyone that obsessed with the K rate? He's been a groundball machine his entire career, rarely walks guys, and doesn't allow many dongs. He's a FIP beater and his consistent low 3s ERA isn't fluky. We're talking about a 306 2/3-inning sample of him pu...

Re: Christian Yelich

These offers for Yelich are pretty crazy, IMO. He'd make us better, but not THAT much better. Happ + Almora in CF is pretty comfortably a 3 win platoon with significant upside. Unless you think that Yelich will find more power outside of FL, he pretty much is who he is. That's a really good, consist...

Cards fans are going to be disappointed when Pham is merely ordinary this year. I also hear him get called a young player all the time, but he'll play the entire season at 30 years old.

Re: Politics & Current Events

Not quite...the rate would still be 20%, which is less than the 35% they were paying before, but the bill as written now has a 20% rate with a ton of favorable deductions/credits (the regular system), and a 20% rate with not many deductions/credits (AMT), and businesses have to pay whatever system ...

Re: Minor League Musings place holder.

This doesn't really deserve its own thread; from MLBTR: The Mariners have also inked former Cubs farmhand John Andreoli to a minor league pact, Johns tweets, adding that the 27-year-old outfielder hit 14 homers for Triple-A Iowa last season to go along with a .244/.348/.435 slash line. Andreoli was ...
