Re: Starting Pitching candidates

We’re only three week until pitchers and catchers report. At what point do teams say, “Eff it!” and start signing Jason Vargas, Andrew Cashner, and etc. for cheap, short term contracts? How bad would it be if the Cubs were to just sign Vargas or Tillman (or insert the low rent stop gap of your choi...

Re: Starting Pitching candidates

From MLBTR: Reports early in the offseason suggested that Cobb was seeking upwards of $100MM over a five-year term, though FanRag’s Jon Heyman recently wrote that Cobb is now believed “willing” to sign a four-year deal at a total of $70MM or a five-year deal worth $80MM. Despite a fairly robust grou...

I can't believe Avila will sign with us to back up Contreras. Somebody will offer him more money and more playing time.

Re: Wade Davis Signs with the Rockies, 3/$52 M

Good for Wade, good job getting paid and thanks for 2017 and the draft pick. Would really like to see Darvish decide soon, if he isn't going to be a Cub then I think there's a world of creativity(Machado? Archer? Reed?) they might more aggressively explore with the extra payroll capacity. In some c...

Re: Starting Pitching candidates

From yesterday's MLBTR chat: "I am the walrus 5:57 Cubs trade Happ, Russell, Carantini and Alzolay for Archer. Done deal? Jason Martinez 5:58 That would get it done. I don't think the Cubs would offer that much and I don't they'd have to offer that much. Happ, Caratini, Alzolay and another pros...

The only reason Jake is in any dicussion is because he would get less years and money than Darvish. If the years and money are the same, either Jake's agent needs a big raise or Yu's agent needs to be fired.

Re: Orioles are shopping Machado - (Cubs in talks per Levine)

At this point (minus a Yelich trade), I'm resigned to them signing Darvish and a couple of relievers and calling it an off-season. Let the progression/regression of Schwarber and Heyward as well as Russell and Baez determine whether Harper or Machado is a bigger need next off-season. Signing Darvis...

We could hope MLB goes to an offense and a defense like the NFL. Heyward could have trade value as a defensive specialist.

There may be a big market for RFs who play great defense and hit like 160 lb. middle infielders.

Re: THE Bryce Harper in 2018 Thread

https://www.fanragsports.com/murray-cubs-appear-to-be-favorites-to-land-bryce-harper/ The new favorite to acquire Harper, in my opinion, is the Chicago Cubs. That guess isn’t sourced – it’s merely speculation. But I’m not the only person to think it. Not by a long shot. EDIT: Jason Heyward has a pl...

Re: The Yu Darvish Thread

I still haven't seen any indication that Darvish "may have" reduced his asking price. Darvish is obviously the better pitcher going forward, but if the numbers end up (not that they will) with Darvish @ 6 yrs/$160 mil. and Arrieta @ 4 yrs./$90 mil. it might be a tough decision. I think th...

Re: The Yu Darvish Thread

Im not taking one side ornthe other, just asking: how much more is Jake gonna get than Darvish? Is Darvish over Jake the right choice? I am not sure Jake is going to get more than Darvish but i think Jake has not given signs of coming down from his asking price and Darvish may have. That is why the...

Use other stuff to get Machado lol what other stuff "Well we can't offer Addison Russell but you could have [squints at our top 30] Bobson Dugnutt?" Well we sure aren't gonna trade Steve McDichael, are we? More seriously, Happ, Almora, and Montgomery are the names that leap to mind, thoug...

Got excited there for a minute thinking they might want Heyward LOL: "Jon Heyman of Fan Rag adds some further details to the situation in a follow-up to Encina’s report. The offers for Machado haven’t been sufficient to this point in Baltimore’s eyes, and the organization will take him off the ...

Re: Orioles are shopping Machado - (Cubs in talks per Levine)

From MLBTR: Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports that if the Orioles are to trade Machado, they hope to come to an agreement with a team by the end of the week. Baltimore isn’t backing down off its asking price of two starting pitchers that it can control for “at least the next four or fiv...

Re: The Yu Darvish Thread

Obviously the Cobb, and maybe others, asking price being higher than expected/wanted is playing a role but I think it's a fair assumption to think Darvish's price may be down a bit too. MLBTR had him at 6/160 and Fangraphs was 6/168 and median crowdsources was 5/125, where do we think it's dropped ...

Re: Orioles are shopping Machado (and he wants to go back to SS)

But then nothing would preclude the Cubs from signing Machado instead and trading Russell then. Or just keep Russel and Machado and move KB to left. That's true, but I think there would be a better chance of extending Machado (after being on the team) than bidding on him as a FA. Why? He would get ...

Re: Orioles are shopping Machado (and he wants to go back to SS)

Losing 4 Years of Russell, for 1 year of Machado and then a 300+M FA contract in 2019, vs keeping 4 years of Russell and spending 350-400M on Harper. Pretty much a no brainer from my side. Of course that's assuming Harper accepts our offer over the 4 or 5 other $400 million offers on the table. But...
