Re: Stats and Context

As far as the main thrust of the thread goes, the biggest thing for me is that the absolute rule is prospects fail. I find it much easier to frame understanding of a prospect's chances when you understand that the default is not how successful the player will be, but if he will ever even spend a da...

Bryan Hudson in May: 4 G, 22 IP, 17 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 13 K, 1.23 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, .215 BAA, 39 GO - 8 AO AZ Phil reported that he had two excellent outings in a row at ExST before his promotion. Looks like his 1st two starts in April (in which he went 8 IP, 9 ER, 6 BB, 2 K) might just have b...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-22-17

It's just one game, but Wladimir Galindo made several nice plays at 3B yesterday. His defense has been questioned, but he was impressive and his arm is plenty strong enough. He showed good athleticism and quick reactions on two plays in particular. One was a terrible hop on a sharply hit ground ball...

Re: Stats and Context

One of the things I still look for with pitchers (that started back in the Sunday sports section minor league reports days) was less hits than innings pitched (preferably a lot less), more than a K per inning and at least a 3-to-1 K to BB ratio. (That's changing a bit now, though, as the Cubs in par...

Re: Stats and Context

I think stats are secondary to scouting reports for me. If a young guy is holding his own or performing very well, for the level he's at, then I perk up a bit. DSL/Arizona- Complex ball stats mean next to nothing, unless they're ridiculously awful. I'd much prefer reports. Short Season Ball- I don'...

Stats and Context

Like many of you that post here, I've been following Cubs prospects as closely as I could for a long time, about 30 years now. Access to information has changed a lot over that span. Used to be you'd have to wait until the Sunday sports section to get the minor league stats for each level once a wee...

Re: 5/16 Minor League Discussion and Boxes

Oh good catch, I was looking at the Tennessee half of the inning for some reason. The inside the park HR was a well struck fly ball that Burks didn't see at first. He probably would've caught it, but lost it in the sun or just got a late break. Almost caught up to it but ran into the wall at pretty...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-20-17

Do scouts even go to watch Kellogg pitch? I'm truly asking. No. If he's on the mound, then cool. But, they're looking at other guys for the most part. Might as well take a few notes. But, he's not even a top 30 prospect in a middling system. If there was ANY buzz whatsoever on him, BA, BP, FG, or L...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-18-17

It's a shame Cease twisted his ankle because he looked better tonight than he had all season. The fastball command was really good. The curve continued to be knee-buckling. His first 4 outs were Ks for a reason. He was painting. The runs that scored really weren't even of his doing. The lead off wal...

Trending up? Some Cubs pitching is coming alive in the month of May. Each of these pitchers have improved their numbers from the month of April. Clifton - 3 G, 17.2 IP, 16 H, 6 BB, 19 K, .242 BAA, 1.53 ERA, 1.25 WHIP De La Cruz - 2 G, 13 IP, 8 H, 0 BB, 7 K, .178 BAA, 0.69 ERA, 0.62 WHIP Hudson - 3 G...

Re: 5/16 Minor League Discussion and Boxes

Nice to see Hudson accumulating effective outings. He had the one bad outing, 7 runs. But in his other four starts, he's allowed 4 runs total. Not too bad. A literal ground ball machine too. Very promising results recently, I'd love to hear a report on his stuff though. Watched every pitch. I love ...

Re: 5/16 Minor League Discussion and Boxes

Well, it looks like there was an inside the park homer, followed by a delay. But, he evidently stayed in for the final two outs of the inning, before being replaced once they went back out in the field for the top of the 4th. Oh good catch, I was looking at the Tennessee half of the inning for some...

Re: 5/15 Minor League Boxes and Discussions

Before we move someone of serious consequence, I'd kind of like to see if Beane could be enticed with some sort of group of 3 or 4 of Young, Candelario, Caratini, Zagunis, Clifton, Hedges, and Burks in a quantity type package for Gray. If the Cubs braintrust thinks Gray will/can rebound, then hell ...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-14-17

Couple of fun facts: Myrtle Beach 1B Matt Rose got his first walk of the season today (in his 26th game). He had previously struckout 20 times without a single base on balls. South Bend C/1B Jhonny Pereda had an impressive streak broken yesterday. Pereda had gotten a hit in 16 straight games and 22 ...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 5-10-17

You literally just did a comparison. If the bar for excellence is topping a 5 HR outing for a pitcher, then I will repeat that standards are higher. I can not even conceive of what is so controversial about stating that a 1:1 K:BB, just 3 Ks in 7, against an A ball lineup is unimpressive. Kinda mis...
