Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-21-18

Thanks for that. Seems about usual for Assad. Maybe he can gain a tick as he hopefully continues to shed the ample baby fat. It looks like he's shed a lot of it this off season. There's a little more to go, but he's always going to have a more stocky build. He's still just 20, so he's got time to c...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-21-18

No notes on Trevor Clifton as the Smokies broadcast was, once again, unwatchable. Whoever is mixing the sound for that broadcast consistently has the in-stadium feed (PA announcer, walk up music, inane sound effects, etc.) 5 times louder than the play-by-play. Can barely hear the announcer. Alex Lan...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-21-18

Finally got my MiLB subscription up and running. Any velo readings given will be passed along. Javier Assad: He looks to have slimmed down a bit from last year. 1st inning - 90-91 FB, looping curveball. Struggled to find his spots. Got a called 3rd strike on a much tighter curve (could've been a cha...

Re: Minor League Musings place holder.

For those of you who go back a ways, former Cubs #1 prospect Felix Pie, who had been out of professional baseball since 2013, has resurfaced in the Mexican League at the age of 33. His slash through 82 AB is .354/.427/.659 with 5 HR, 10 2B, 12 K and 12 BB.

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-20-18

Nice night for Hudson, first bad game for Rucker in a awhile... Of course the highlight of the night was Alzolay. I can't remember the last time the Cubs have had a starting pitching prospect this good in Iowa. Of course Hendricks is awesome, but he was a nice surprise; a B prospect that turned out...

Re: Pitching Prospect Depth

With Alzolay in AAA and Underwood's fast start, Iowa's rotation is very interesting. Alzolay looks for real, but I'm leery of Underwood still (fast start notwithstanding). I tend to discount starts to a season in general (fast or slow), especially when it's the player's first at a new level, but I'...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-18-18

The beginning of the minor league season is always a frustrating time for me. I've waited all off season for it to start, but because of the nature of the game and the youth of most of the players, the first 30 IP and 100 PA for guys are kind of meaningless. We all hope for good starts for guys and ...

I knew he was destined for the pen! It's early yet, but I nominate this for post of the year.

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-17-18

CHILDERSb3: Luis Vazquez is an above-average defender at SS right now and an emerging hitter with developing power. He will almost certainly be the starting SS at Eugene when the NWL begins play in June, and he could very well finish the 2018 season at South Bend (as happened with Aramis Ademan las...

At 19.5, Aramis Ademan is the second youngest player in the Carolina League. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/youngest-by-league-2018-opening-day/ Time to call your baseball stock broker and buy San Diego Padres futures. Re: Minor League Musings place holder.

Nice info from AZ Phil: If you're talking just about position players (currently at extended spring training and not on a full season roster), nobody makes harder contact than Christopher Morel. I can close my eyes during BP and tell you when Morel is hitting because it sounds like a rifle shot. He ...

Re: Minor League Musings place holder.

https://twitter.com/longenhagen/status/979774322205011968?s=21 Pretty underwhelming stuff from Underwood. If there were any other legit options at Iowa, he would be in the pen already. I've long thought that's where he'd wind up due to his inability to stay healthy and that his middling stuff might...

Re: Minor League Musings place holder.

Morel and Guerra both got sent down to EXST. I'll take it as an absolute positive, that Morel made them take that hard of a look at him..... Guerra is a bit disappointing though. With his pedigree, I expected full season ball for him. Did we get $$ on Guerra? $10K? $20K? I think for a new guy in ne...

Re: Minor League Musings place holder.

Welp, Cory Mazzoni is back. Dodgers tried to sneak him through waivers and the Cubs claimed him.

I wonder if he had even packed his bags yet. At least the trip from Sloan Park to the Dodgers spring training complex in Glendale is just 30 miles. Well, 60 miles round trip...

Pitching Prospect Depth

The Cubs pitching prospect depth has really filled out over the last two seasons as the front office focused heavily on pitching in the draft and on the IFA side in 2015. Some assignments could still change with 4 days left before full season minor leaguers break camp, but this is likely how the sta...

Re: Minor League Musings place holder.

Luis Diaz has been putting up some nice numbers so far in minor league ST. After his DSL breakout last season, it'll be interesting to see if he starts in Eugene or one of the Mesa teams. C Jhonny Pereda has looked good thus far especially behind the plate. He threw out 4 of 4 attempted base stealer...

Re: Minor League Musings place holder.

I'm with Hrubes on Robinson. He's a 91-93 guy who knows how to pitch. He's got 4 or 5 pitches and changes speeds well. He's not Hendricks, but he did go to Dartmouth, at least. Honestly, its kind of a pet peeve of mine when age gets brought up in relation to where a guys at, when he's only had one ...

Re: Minor League Musings place holder.

Heck, if you want to go a few years further back, since Paredes and Cease are so far away, we could include prospects (at the time of their trade) LeMahieu and Godley and have a pretty decent major league line up. 2B - LeMahieu (29) SS - Torres (21) LF - Jimenez (21) RF - Soler (26) 3B - Candelario...

Re: Minor League Musings place holder.

It's debatable whether or not the Cubs will trade away Caratini. On one hand, the Cubs actually have a roster spot waiting for him. A young, switch-hitting catcher with a solid bat and decent defense is valuable commodity. On the other hand, the Cubs are in win now mode, and Caratini is the most ma...

I don't believe this is true. Vlad Jr. was linked the Blue Jays from the start. Yeah, I don't remember the Cubs being linked to Vlad Jr. Same here. I don't remember the Cubs having interest in Vlad Jr. either. I wished they did though. Really? I remember it so distinctly. I was even upset when I le...

Re: Minor League Musings place holder.

Dario Alvarez has one option year left and Shae Simmons has two, but they also have the right to elect free agency if sent down . I'm almost 100% certain that this is not true. The Cubs can option them freely, but, if the Cubs remove them from the 40-man roster and attempt to send them to the minor...

Re: Minor League Musings place holder.

Wilson was fine yesterday. AZ Phil said he was throwing 96. He can be the wild card. Yep, he looks healthy and assuming no setbacks with the blister should be on the opening day roster. I like Butler to break with the team. He pitched really well for the first 3 innings, then fell apart in the 4th....
