Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-17-19

Hatch blew the string of great starts by the original 5 starters in the Smokies rotation yesterday, but Cory Abbott picked it right back up going:

5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K on 92 pitches/57 strikes.

Re: Minor League Musings

Alzolay pitched today in ExST. From AZ Phil: RHP Adbert Alzolay (on AAA Iowa 7-day IL with a lat strain) saw his first game action of 2019, getting the start and working 1.2 IP. He allowed one run on two hits (a double and a single) and no walks, with four strikeouts. He got eleven swings & miss...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-15-19

For sure. I never get too excited about pitching prospects until they are in AA, but it never hurts to have dudes in the lower minors to follow. Did anyone see any velos for Miller yesterday? I'm interested in seeing if he is still in the mid-90's, or if he's back in the lower 90's again. I don't r...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-15-19

More of that, please. All the previous AZPhil blurbs on Franklin that I've seen have him walking a couple guys and not missing many bats. Yeah, the potential Eugene rotation of Yovanny Cruz (19), Jeremiah Estrada (20), Danis Correa (19), Kohl Franklin (19) and Yunior Perez (20) looks to be a fun on...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-13-19

Um, Riley Thompson, everybody? Has the upside, now we are starting... starting... to see the production in full season. He's gotten a little lucky stringing out his 10 hits over 9.2 innings, but I'll take 9 Ks against 1 BB. Decent GO/AO, too. I'm getting ahead of myself but, if he can keep this up, ...

Re: Minor League Musings

Gotta #OwnUp for Bruzual. I had him listed in a large pool of possibly interesting arms between 16-20 behind Marquez and not some other guy last summer. I must, at my core, understand despite claims otherwise that I am no supreme expert. I would add Joel Machado to that pool of pitchers —— Hoerner ...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-11-19

So Hatch’s start to the season is intriguing: 10 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 11 K He also ended last year with 28.1 IP, 24 H, 34/7 K/BB, 3 HR in his last 5 starts. I vaguely remember reading a story last year that he made some mechanical changes that seemed to line up with his end-of-season hot streak. Wou...

Re: Minor League Musings

Despite spending $300,000 on him, the Cubs cut LHP Jonathan Bruzual. It comes as little surprise because his numbers were ridiculously brutal. He finishes his Cubs career with a 7.77 ERA, 2.12 WHIP, walking more than he struck out (69/64), but he only allowed 1 HR in 63.2 IP, so... The Cubs have rel...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-9-19

Very intrigued by the Bryan Smith write up on Marquez over at BN. He's saying that Marquez is throwing plenty of 2-seamers, which are obviously the lower velocity ones. Something to monitor going forward. That's about as good of a first full season start as you could hope for in chilly weather and ...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-9-19

Ernst's account is a little more glowing than I would give Marquez after watching the game. A lot of the strikes he recorded were fastballs out of the zone that were chased by Low-A hitters. The upside is definitely there, and the inconsistency he showed is almost to be expected from a 20-year-old, ...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-7-19

The first 4 Smokies starters (Hatch, Abbott, Thompson and Steele) have combined for:

19.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 21 K, 0.66 WHIP, 0.92 ERA.

Tyson Miller is up next. No pressure, buddy...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-6-19

We've seen Hatch and Abbott put together 2 good performances thus far for Tennessee, with Hatch's being far more dominant. Keegan Thompson is keeping the line moving with a great start thru 5 innings thus far. And I mean great. You're not superstitious are you? (It's a no hitter!) It's funny. Not m...

Yeah, he looked good out there today. Physically and tools wise, he reminds me of Jeffrey Baez. Let's hope he can put it together faster and more completely than he did.

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-6-19

Eury Ramos had an interesting start, he of the mid-90s FB but not much else at this point. He shut down West Michigan thru the first 4 innings, giving up only a bunt single with 2 walks and 3 Ks. Did he tire in the 5th this early in the season? Maybe, who knows. No velocities were given. He didn't l...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-6-19

Jared Young really likes hitting off of the Braves top pitching prospects. Hit a 1st inning HR off Ian Anderson in the season opener and another one today off of Joey Wentz. Lefty against lefty.

Re: International Free Agency Thread 2018-2019

Looks like the Cubs now have about $1.4 million to spend before the next July 2nd period. Capture.PNG Not sure that's enough for Yolbert Sanchez: https://twitter.com/longenhagen/status/1092852624989122560 Yeah, it was speculation by AZ Phil, but it is interesting to note that he could've signed bac...

Really kicking myself right about now for now renewing milb.tv this year. Hudson had 3 K's in the 1st (also gave up a single and RBI double) and I would like to see if he's seen any gains on the fastball. In the 1st inning, struckout the first guy on a change up on the outside corner. The second wa...

Re: Minor League Discussion & Boxes, 4-5-19

Abbott picks up where he left off last season with a typically stingy and efficient outing going 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2K on 68 pitches (40 strikes). That's 2-for-2 for the AA rotation with Hatch's dominant performance last night. With the depth of BOR prospects in the system (Clifton, Swarmer...

Re: International Free Agency Thread 2018-2019

AZ Phil speculates on who the Cubs might be after with their newfound IFA money: However, it's very unlikely that the Cubs would have paid the Orioles $50,000 to re-claim Araujo and then traded him back to Baltimore just for ISBP space (in other words, the right to spend $750K more money on internat...
