Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

My school district (a k-12 district) was the first in DuPage county to go back to in person learning a few weeks ago. Aaannnd now they're going back to 100% remote until at least Nov 4. Bars are still open though! Which school? And I assume it's because of a vivid breakout? My kids kindergarten in ...

Several years ago my wife brought me home something called - "The Hottest Sauce in the Universe" - from Pepper Palace in TN - https://pepperpalace.com/collections/hot-sauce-extreme - guess its been replaced by something called - "The Hottest Sauce in the Universe, 2nd Dimension"...

Re: The Book Thread

I just finished The Dark Forest, the second Three Body Problem book. It was so good that it actually made the first book both worse and better at the same time. It's probably just behind 2001 and Contact as my favorite scifi/first contact novels of all time. I cant wait to read the final book, but ...

Definitely a Labor Day surge: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html So horsefeathering stupid; a [expletive] virus doesn't take a holiday. Thanksgiving has the potential to be a bloodbath; large indoor family gatherings are some of the worst sources of spreading the ...

We'll see about the actual follow-through, but at least an early rhetorical positive. https://twitter.com/GeoffRBennett/status/1307370489548099587 They need to overtly threaten this, maybe scare the Republicans into not pushing through a new judge, and then when they win all three branches, do all ...

Re: Justice Ginsburg has died

Is it better for the republican machinery to try to ram a nominee through (which I’m guessing will be unpopular even by gop governing standards) , or is it better to turn the election into judges v Biden instead of Trump v Biden? You'd be guessing wrong. They'll do both. Yeah this is a no brainer. ...

If (when) the democrats take all three branches, day one needs to be getting rid of the filibuster and bringing the total justice count up to 13.

Re: The Politics Thread

I take it you live in Illinois. Whats your understanding of the property tax vs income tax issues there? Have property taxes really become that crippling? Let's just say that I only pay 6500 a year in property taxes and I'm super pumped how low that is. I have no idea how people can buy these place...

Re: The Politics Thread

probably a dump question, but why does Illinois need a voting referendum to change the tax rates? side note - these rich horsefeathers undoubtedly are paying more for these commercials than they would in the more taxes they'd be hit with. A flat tax rate is written into the state constitution, so t...

Re: Anyone into fitness?

I just upgraded my gps watch after 10 years of the old one and this one has a heart rate monitor. I never knew what my heart rate was when I ran but apparently I run at like 80-90% of my max. I’m working to stay below 80% of max for the base building phase, and it’s been *really* hard to stay disci...

Another shortage I hadn't counted on.....desks. With kids going back to school from home, apparently that's a thing. My wife has been working from the kitchen table for months now. Guess I get to see how handy I can be and build something myself. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2020/08/24/desk...

Re: Should we talk about the weather? (Hi-hi-hi!)

Apparently a huge chunk of Iowa is out of power. Not looking forward to spending a large chunk of time without electricity tonight. The Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area took a massive hit. I’d be shocked if parts of CR get power back this week. My prediction was correct....we lost power at 4:15 this aft...

I will second liking Hulu live. There were some downgrades going from Comcast to Hulu (mainly having to do with the guide and ability to flip between channels easily), but overall I'm really happy to have made the switch. It does what it needs to do for me.
