Re: Kris Bryant is awesome and we were always right to love him

I didn't even consider Caratini in why to trade Contreras, but he seems like a not terrible option. A good backup with starting experience should be cheap as usual, and there's options like Jason Castro, Zunino, Chirinos, Martin...A couple of the things I said about trading Bryant (shame, shame) mi...

Re: Kris Bryant is awesome and we were always right to love him

I can see a case for trading Contreras and keeping Bryant. Caratini has made remarkable progress as a receiver (he's ranked 18th of 104 catchers in framing this season - Willson is 97th). Darvish is a notoriously difficult guy to catch, and he's obviously developed a rapport with slick Vic. Caratini...

Re: Kris Bryant is awesome and we were always right to love him

The rationale for trading Bryant is simple. If you want a major shakeup, you can't do it without trading someone who's part of the core. Almora, Happ and Russell have little to no trade value. Schwarber is LH Rob Deer at this point - you could get an asset for him but not anyone really impactful. Su...

He's trading walks for homers

Re: Heyman - Lucroy to Cubs Done

Lucroy doesn't have to be All-star Lucroy - he just has to be better than Taylor Davis. I don't know why his framing numbers have tanked (that seems very odd to me) but overall still a good handler of pitchers and even if he hits a little bit, he's still the best option on the table.

1 hit in 17 IP in his last 3 starts. He's warm.

Re: It’s not me, it’s Yu

0 or 1 BB in 6 straight starts. Leads the Cubs in IP and (obviously) strikeouts. Among the league leaders in Ks and hard contact %. At this point it's really only HRs to LH that's keeping Yu from being a legit #1 starter. If he keeps using the splitter and gets those under control, he's the ace of t...

Re: Trade targets 2019

That's a good shout. Always liked Rivera - very good handler of pitchers, good framer, well-liked in the clubhouse. Not much of a hitter but better than Maldonado - certainly more power.

Re: Trade targets 2019

Not a trade, but Lucroy was DFA'd by the Angels today. A shadow of his former self with an 84wRC+, but if I recall correctly he has always been a very good pitch framer. Should there be any interest here? His framing numbers have totally tanked the last couple of years. Which is really weird, when ...

Re: Trade targets 2019

Of the mistakes Theo has made in the past few seasons (and lets be honest, there have been several) deciding not to trade for Verlander - which effectively resulted in the Quintana trade - may be the worst. Perhaps I'm not remembering correctly, but Didn't they request Baez in the deal? Look at who...

Re: Carl Traded to Padres

Carl skipping Trump to see the dinos is the most legit thing that's ever happened. I'll miss him. I'll always believe if he'd just started Guyer off w a heater in the bottom of the 10th in the WS, he'd have gotten him out and we'd have never needed to turn to Monty. Yeah, that was a strange call by...

Why would they trade him now when the injury risk is going to mean they get pennies on the dollar?

Re: Trade targets 2019

His metrics are down this year - he was slightly above average last year. Probably noise, and the reality is he’s right about league average at both, a little better at 2B than short.

Re: Trade targets 2019

Villar isn't a bad player. Career neutral splits, .746 OPS (1.6 WAR) this year, pretty good at 2B and acceptable at SS, a genuine base stealer. Money is the issue here but if the Os eat some salary and the prospect cost is minimal, I don't think that's a terrible move. Exciting? No. Hanser Alberto m...

Re: Trade targets 2019

I like Castellanos, liked him more as an offseason move before not collusion led to no Harper, but yeah he would be a solid move. In that sense, him getting hurt just before the deadline sucks. OTOH, hopefully this forces this FO to do something more clever and possibly even long term. Oh and trade...

Re: Happ is Back

Bingo. Considering we were coming off postseasons in which we A) won the title in large part because of Chapman's 8-out save in Game 5 of the Series and B) advanced to the NLCS in large part because of Wade Davis' 7-out save in Game 5 against Washington, it was straight-up stupid to then go sign a ...

Re: Trade targets 2019

They better get it together or we might have to flip to what prospects we want from other teams and sell the few guys in our BP who get outs. It's not the least appetizing idea ever. This group is so dysfunctional a deadline deal or two isn't gonna fix it. You have to figure a teardown is coming at...
