Re: Winter Meetings 2017 thread

I wouldn't say they waited a year too long. I'd say they waited a few months too long. To ask them to trade Machado last winter ... after a 89 win season, a wildcard loss that might've been prevented had Buck gone to Zach Britton ... that's just unrealistic. They were still on the "high" ...

Re: Orioles are shopping Machado (and he wants to go back to SS)

I'm not willing to assume that the (crap) FO/ownership of the O's would fleece the Cards in any deal. The way they do business just wouldn't give me much confidence were I an O's fan. It's hard to tell how things would go with that team. While I don't think there would be a fleecing (I don't think ...

Re: Orioles are shopping Machado (and he wants to go back to SS)

The Cardinals getting Machado would certainly make 2018 a lot more interesting, but it's not something that would upset me all that much because it would cost Reyes/Weaver plus, and the Cards would have a snowball's chance in hell of retaining him beyond next year.

Re: Marcell Ozuna Traded to the Cardinals

I'll just stick this here....Cards traded Piscotty to the A's, which puts him closer to his mom, who was diagnosed with ALS earlier this year. I have a feeling that Piscotty bounces back and that he'll produce well enough to make people wonder why the Cardinals bothered with this Piscotty/Ozuna swa...

Re: The Alex Cobb Thread

If Cobb is going to demand 20MM per, he can kick rocks. I'd rather see if Darvish could be had for ~5/125, or deal for a risk/upside guy like Salazar.

Re: Orioles are shopping Machado (and he wants to go back to SS)

Yeah, the likely motivation for the Sox would have to be flipping him. I just see very little chance of him extending regardless of the team.

Re: Winter Meetings 2017 thread

Last year Longoria was about as productive with the bat as Grichuk, and they got upwards of 5 wins from Gyorko + Wong at 2B/3B. I get that Wong isn't the picture of stability, but I'm still a bit confused that Longoria would be a priority. Yeah, while Longo would be a defensive upgrade, he'd likely...

Bruce playing RF in that ballpark would be amusing, at least.

Expected. This definitely makes them better, but not enough so to move the needle much in terms of the division.

I hope they paid through the nose.

Not only does that not make sense for the Cubs, wasn't the rumor that the Indians wanted LH hitting in return? I mean, that idea is just comprehensively stupid.

Re: Orioles are shopping Machado (and he wants to go back to SS)

I don't see a fit for us here at all. There's probably going to be a considerable cost to acquire him, he's a lock to test free agency after this year, and he doesn't play a position of need.

I actually kind of hope the Cardinals take a run at him.

Machado, maybe. But not Harper. They're not just going to completely ignore the luxury tax, and they've got their OF (and DH) pretty well covered now.

Re: Shohei Ohtani Signs with the Angels

I wasn't expecting him to.sign with the Cubs, but the Angels? That just seems ill-advised.

OTOH, with the way this has played out, it's fitting that it was the least expected outcome that actually occurred.

Re: Where will Giancar-go?

Oh man, if we could do Almora, Happ, Alzolay, de la Cruz and someone like Zagunis for Stanton, Yelich and Volquez I'd do cartwheels. That contract probably would bite us and I wouldn't want it to hinder us from getting Harper. For all we know, this could be posturing/his agent doing this just to ma...

And if true, Stanton being willing to accept a trade to the Midwest, but not to St. Louis, is horsefeathering delicious.

It seems to me that while there may be varying levels of confidence on their parts, none of these teams have any real idea what is going to happen and are simply trying to maximize their chances in whatever way they can. I have no particular confidence in the Cubs' chances, but these trades don't m...

The number being floated around for the Marlins projected target payroll is about 75MM. I'm sure they'd like to keep a couple of good players, at least. why would they do that? They suck balls and have no money. They'd be much better off ripping off the bandaid and losing every game for two years t...

Re: Where will Giancar-go?

So the Cardinals are probably not getting Stanton, and it honestly has to sting that a top player doesn't want to go there. It's not just Stanton, but Price, Heyward, Ohtani (not that the Cards showed a ton of interest in Ohtani, but he did eliminate them right off the bat), etc. The reputation of ...
