Re: Politics & Current Events

Vaccines induce your body to produce antibodies. With monoclonal antibodies, they generate the antibodies directly and put them into your body. A lot of the super-expert medical people I follow seem to be more optimistic about them than vaccines, and there's several in the US starting Phase 3 trial...

In case people are still sweating this after Kenney expressed confidence a few weeks back that it would be done.

Re: Politics & Current Events

I think it's plausible that by late October, we've got an emergency-use authorization for a monoclonal antibody treatment that is effective enough to combine with all the other effects (other treatments, a percentage of the US already being infected) to be popularly known as a "cure." I d...

Re: On Bended Knee - The Rizzo Thread

I remember sensing the tide turning in late 2014. First, IIRC, it was Alcantara (lol) and Hendricks getting called up around the same time. Then Javy which was super exciting until he started striking out in 80% of his PAs. Then Soler came up and did crazy awesome things. Rizzo had turned it around ...

Re: MLB Imposes 60 Game Season, Spring Training 2.0 Starts in 7 Days

i think he's getting mixed up thinking of local blackouts when the teams dont hit an attendance threshold, like used to happen in the NFL. Yes. When I signed up for MLB.tv way back in the aughts one of the reasons the gave for blackouts was to encourage fans local to their favorite teams to buy tic...

Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

Yep, here comes the death increase. When they never really got *that* low to begin with. The good news it that there's already signs that the population of those areas is adjusting and should reduce R to ~1 going forward. But that's not going to be good enough to be rid of it. Lack of a coherent na...

i just wanted to make clear that the interview wasn't 100% negativity about the situation as i'm sure most of us are tired of constant bad news

Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

This is pretty good (in terms of a level headed look at the situation)

also the tweet is not really indicative of the entire tone of the interview. it's not all doom and gloom.

Re: MLB Imposes 60 Game Season, Spring Training 2.0 Starts in 7 Days

I'd be pretty shocked if they cancelled. As long as they can find 25 x 30 players to fill the rosters, they're gonna run through something and declare a champion to fulfill the TV contracts. If a player dies from COVID? Nah, if that happens it’s dunzo. What if the player's case is traced to somethi...

Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

I know several people who have tested positive. A couple are asymptomatic and the rest have had pretty mild symptoms. I am scheduled to get tested on Thursday. Last week I had body aches and a mild fever. Overall it was nowhere near some of the worst colds/flus I've had in my life. FWIW I tend to b...

Re: RE: Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

i've seen a few anecdotal quotes in some local news stories from hospitals saying that the cases popping up right now aren't as severe as what we were seeing in spring and that they are doing much better in terms of treatment. i guess we'll see soon if/how that bears out in the numbers. I know seve...

Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

https://twitter.com/DrEricDing/status/1279749506037317634?s=20 I didn't realize the WHO was still pushing surface contact as the primary means of transmission and not airborne particles, as this thread implies. All of the stuff in there seems like stuff we've believed to be the case for at least sev...

Re: NFL Offseason

lol I agree, it’s funny that people think the Cleveland Indians or Atlanta Braves team names offend anything approaching a majority of Native Americans. Why should it be ok for it to offend any significant number of people? What good reason is there for those being the team mascots other than, &quo...

Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

Once it burns itself out, it doesn't really disappear but it becomes endemic, with everyone being at least partially resistant either natively or from previous infection. It joins the dozens of viruses we call "common cold" or "just the flu." Some of those "dozens" are...

Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)

do other seasonal respiratory viruses tend to tick up in the south when it gets oppressively hot and people are more reliant on being indoors/air conditioned?

i'm just curious if this pattern is usually a thing that happens (only way worse with this thing)
