Re: 2020 Offseason Thread
At least Theo had a track record of building a team and had an owner willing to spend when it was necessary. Hoyer has always been in the mix, but was never the guy to build a team. Also, who knows what financial commitment PTR will make in a few years. Hoyer was the GM of what I guess I have to ca...

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread
^^ Yeah, if this team sucks next year then NSBB will be crickets Honestly, the rebuilding years were probably the most invested I had ever been in the Cubs in my whole life. Theo had a lot to do with that, but if they blow it up and pull in some big prospects/youngsters I actually think I might be ...

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread
Sustained success was always dependent on keeping a top farm system. That obviously hasn’t happened. So now you’re faced with heading off the cliff in 2021 or waiting until everybody leaves in 2022. I don’t think we’re getting much for anybody outside of Contreras, so I wouldn’t blame the Cubs if t...

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread
I still don't think the Cubs will start over. Trading KB, Schwarber, and Contreras makes the team the epitome of mediocrity, but that might be enough in the NL Central. It wouldn't surprise me if the NL Central winner wins 82-85 games. Of course that's assuming Baez and Rizzo return to form and Hend...

Jeebus, have a heart man! First and foremost, this gives the Ricketts family a chance to at least try and pick up the pieces
You can pick up a lot of pieces for $150 million in tax breaks.

In other words, for those who TL;DR -ed my post the other day: The Cubs had a 500m construction budget but spent 1b on construction prior to covid, and now on top of that HALF A BILLION DOLLARS IN OVERAGES, they have covid losses PTR has described as “biblical”... ...as well as economic uncertainti...

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread
The Mets were already going to be the me off the big spenders/buyers but with Cano busted for PEDs that opens up another $24 mil. If we blow it up for whatever reasons seems like they’re a fit for a lot of our guys. KB, Willy, Yu, Javy and maybe even Kimbrel. Not totally blowing it up, but how abou...

I'm not surprised. Why should he try to weave through this off season while dealing with financial restrictions when he has lots of other options out there.

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread
We could solve the problem If only we could turn back time (when money was flowing) and KB would get us 2-3 good young players/prospects that could step right in and contribute to the ML roster. Unfortunately, those days aren't happening this off season.

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread
I still do not get the thinking, BN's writers like to do this too, that the Cubs will dump their current starters because budgetz to then go pay more money in FA for older starters. How does that work? Are they looking to be competitive in 2021 by signing those guys? The budget is keeping them from...

Being me some chaos and trades. Somewhat encouraging it mentions turnover and not pure selling off. Meaning outgoing talent could be replaced with equal/different talent and they’ll still try and compete. https://twitter.com/realcubsinsider/status/1328182032611074048?s=21 I have trouble believing t...

Re: Theo, your table is ready
When PTR and Theo confirmed he was coming back, they couched all of their statements in language like "We expect...." or "The plan is for..." Theo's so careful with his words, there was clearly an "unless" involved and this makes by far the most sense. As I've posted b...

Going back to your post about Cohen and the Mets, if he's going to spend crazily to make an impression, we ought to try to take advantage of that. How? I don't get why this guy having money and being willing to spend money on FAs when no one else is opens the door to him spending prospects, especia...

Re: 2020 Offseason Thread
Bryant isn’t going to return horsefeathers with 1 year and ~$25 mil left during the offseason. We’re better off keeping him or NT’ing him if they feel they can spend the money better. So we have Bryant, Kimbrel, and Schwarber with having little or no trade value and PTR tightening the purse strings...

Who wants to take bets that they have a worse winning % next year? I definitely can see it. Keuchel, Grandal and Abreu are all a year older, still a ton of young and unproven/unknown pitching (which can go a lot of ways but has kinda busted so far). Then a guy like Anderson probably regresses since...
