Carpenter will start Wednesday in Atlanta

Manager Tony La Russa announced before Saturday's game that Chris Carpenter will start against the Braves on Wednesday.

It will be Carpenter's first start in almost 16 months. He has been out since Opening Day 2007 after experiencing elbow discomfort and eventually undergoing Tommy John surgery. Carp has made two solid rehab appearances, but if anything goes wrong, the Cardinals will easily be ridiculed for rushing him back. He will take Mitchell Boggs' spot in the starting rotation. We'll see if this gos as well as Mulders return.

He may go longer then 17 pitches, but I pretty sure Carp will be rocked badly.

As others pointed out, he made a start in double A, and one in Triple A

Double A he went 4 inn, 1 hit, 0 runs, 4 walks, 4 ks
In Triple A he went 5.2, 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 5 Ks

How is his arm strength? Less than 10 innings?

No offense wolf, but this move to start Carp, reeks of desparation.

He threw 61 pitches in his 1st outing with 30 or 31 strikes and threw somewhere in the 70s in the second with low 40s in strikes I believe. He's obviously struggling with command with as many balls as he's throwing for a guy who had such good command before he got hurt.

That's to be expected I guess. They'll need to draw on the BP his first few starts in all likelihood.

This does reek a bit of desperation, IMO.

They rushed him through rehab so he can throw 5 innings at the major league level and try to save their season. None of their starters go more than 5 innings anymore.

two rehab starts seems like a low number for a guy rehabbing from TJS.

So....Wednesday is the day we either confirm or put the pixie dust rumors to rest?

I think the Brewers just put the pixie dust phenomenon to rest, but maybe they just have a stock of stronger pixie dust that canceled out LaRussa's pixie dust.

interesting thread over at GRB:

maddash wrote:
Ok, that's a mouthful, and a stat not without its own issues... but houstoncardinal at Viva El Birdos pointed out something pretty glaring for the Cardinals offense.

Basically, BQPF is a measure of how good the pitching a batter has faced has been. It's not exact, but gets us close enough to see some trends. Below (I updated the lists from VEB) are the rankings of players that have faced pitchers with the worst SLG and OBP against, respectively.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/stati ... cid=233217 Minimum 300 PA

Pitchers’ SLG against
Code:
MLB rank    Player
1.   Xavier Nady
2.   Yadier Molina
3.   Albert Pujols
4.   Bill Hall
5.   Rickie Weeks
6.   Skip Schumaker
7.   Ryan Braun
9.   Ryan Ludwick
10.   Rick Ankiel

Pitchers’ OBP against
Code:
1.   Yadier Molina
2.   Ryan Ludwick
3.   Skip Schumaker
4.   Albert Pujols
5.   Troy Glaus
6.   Paul Konerko
7.   Rick Ankiel
8.   Jose Reyes
9.   Carlos Quentin
10.   Jose Bautista

Looking at that, it's hard to ignore the fact that the Cardinals have faced the weakest pitching out of just about any other team. So what does that mean? Well, the gap between the weakest pitching faced and the strongest pitching faced isn't exactly huge (34 points for SLG and 18 points for OBP), but it could go a ways to explaining Yadi's jump in offense this year, and considering how many close games we've been in (39 out of 106 have been 1 run games), it could foretell more loses due to a lack in offensive production if we start to face stronger pitchers.

Pitching is still the big issue, but it wouldn't hurt to look at another bat, too.

Good find, Bob. Anyone else notice some other names on the SLG list? 3 of 10 are Brewers: Ryan Braun, Bill Hall, and Rickie Weeks.

Hmm, that's not really surprising about the Cardinals hitting against crappy pitching. Since July 1st, when they've played teams with a record above .500 they are 4-12 (lost 2 of 3 to the Mets, although they technically split a 4 game set, Cubs, Phillies, and Mets, and got swept in a four game set by the Brewers) while they are 8-1 against teams under .500 (won 2 of 3 against the Pirates, swept a four game set against the Padres, and won two against the Braves thus far).

It will be interesting to see if there's any trend that keeps up the rest of the season. They have 9 series against teams with records over .500 and eight series against teams with records under .500.
