Word Rants

Postby CubinNY » Thu Jan 25, 2018 3:38 pm

Gaslight - stop using it people on the left, it doesn’t make you sound smarter, it makes you sound more pretentious.

Circle back- if I hear one more person in a meeting or presentation use it I’m flipping the bird.

Humbled already has it's own thread but it bears repeating.

Teachers only but Rigor is a word that could be part of a drinking game at in service or faculty meetings.

It really bother me when people use the word "piece" as in, "I have been focusing my attention on the community outreach piece; my colleague Ron has taken the lead on project implementation."

Also, don't tell me about the many hats you wear. "Now, if I may put on my semiotician's hat for a moment, I think there are numerous underlying issues with the existing advertising piece."

Finally, try to avoid growing a dumb push-broom mustache like the guy I know who regularly makes statements such as those above.
In closing, I probably just hate that guy.

I heard the Keebler Elf known as Jeff Sessions say the word "scurrilous" and I already disliked the word before.

Well, I hate that word now and will forever associate the word with old creepy white racists.

It’s not the words themselves, but the way people say them (re: higher ed).

scurrilous is a creepy white racist word like the words sanctity and prayerful.

I'll also add another southern favorite that makes me want to hurl, "bless his heart". As in, "that boy can't read, but bless his heart." In Alabama when someone is blessing your heart it's their way of saying you are horsefeathers.

When my son was in kindergarten and was having trouble cutting zig-zags his teacher said, "Niles is having a hard time cutting zig-zags, bless his little heart, he's all boy." My wife had to grab my leg under the table.

I have a client that regularly refers to finishing up conference calls by using variations of "in an attempt to bring this thing in for a landing".
While I applaud the effort to end a call, it defeats the purpose when you use some wordy phrase to introduce your final thoughts.

couldn't agree more. higher ed is all about trying to sound smarter than you really are.

unless you're me. i'm just about being a sarcastic smartass that wants to have a lot of friends and simultaneously be good at your job. but it's amazing to me (and i learn more and more every year) how damn political EVERYTHING is. it's tiring, honestly.

but what lens were you using when you were viewing these situations? many times that can be influential in how you shape and mold those types of interactions.

Stakeholders has fallen by the wayside of late. I always used to think "Steak holders" and debate in my mind whether they were talking about plates or forks.

The worst people are the Statistics profs who interrupt the presentation to scrutinize the data collection rubric

I’m OUTRAGED by people who constantly shorten the word delicious to “delish! Okay, maybe my use of outrage is a stretch. But it’s annoying.
