This year we had to replace our scenic shop manager. I really liked our last guy, but he got a better job, can't blame him from moving on. The new guy is alright, but he definitely has a "you know who the real victims in America are? 40 year old white men!" streak that at best is annoying, but at worst is inappropriate, especially when he's supervising mostly 20-something women and students of color

I just made the infuriating discovery that a guy here has, no joke, 400 hours of paid time off accumulated.

He has a wife and two young kids.

How much does this guy hate his horsefeathering family?

Probably too busy running a scheme siphoning money off the business.

I'd say he's banking it to retire early, but he's a good 20+ years away from that, plus he's at the cap.

Unless he hoards his money like he hoards time off...

How long has he been accruing? If he's been there for ~20 years it could be a matter of a couple days a year adding up, but I get the sense that's not it.

I get 216 hours per year, and I set my own hours. If we didn't have a rule that capped our carry over at 80, I'd be well over 400. I also get 5 floaters.

Same. Theres a rumor going around that they are going to be changing our carry-over from 1x yearly vacation to 40 hours, which means I'm going to be taking a lot of vacation next year.

In related news, I am done working for the year starting the week of Thanksgiving, and I won't go back until January 6.

He's only been here for about 5-6 years; dude takes one week of vacation a year, and never uses sick time. He calls out sometimes, but then always just makes up the time staying late or leaving early instead of digging in to his mountain of paid off time.

I will confess that it's easier to resent him for this since he talks to literally everyone in a way that I can only best describe as sounding like a disdainful robot. I am genuinely baffled how he got through the interviews.

On a somewhat related note, I’ve probably been on a dozen or so hiring committees over the years and the for the most part I always felt I was a key member in helping select a strong candidate.

But, the last few I/we have been absolutely catfished. I went along with one or two and agreed with the hire and wholeheartedly went out on a limb to advocate strongly for the others. They’ve all been utterly terrible to the point sometimes people will ask “who hired him??”

Anyway, it’s completely rocked my self perception of being someone that can read people well and make accurate first impressions. I’m probably just going to use it to my advantage and decline the next request(s) as they are a pain in the ass and a headache anyway.

There's a couple of George Costanza-types on Rascal scooters here who blast up and down the relatively narrow corridors WAY too fast. One of these days one of these hooligans is gonna catch someone as they come around a corner out of the bathrooms and snap a shin like a wishbone.

My wife works at a place that works a 9/80 schedule. 9 hours per day M-T, 8 hours one Friday and off every other Friday.

And these psychos work their off Fridays for no extra pay all the time.

In my company you can’t bank any time from year to year. Probably my biggest complaint because there are times I end up using up dates in December for no good reason that I’d rather roll over to do like an awesome 4 week road trip out west with the kids when they get older, but I’ve never once left a day out there unused.

I get 3 weeks and we're closed the week of Christmas, which is a huge win for me because I always had to save 3-4 days of vacation to travel at Christmas for family stuff since they're all located at least 4 hours away. I was also so damn busy this summer with work that I didn't use hardly any vacation days and now I'm scrambling to use up enough so I don't lose any even though I'm still going to carry 5 days over into next year.

To be fair, that's basically two years of vacation. But 4 weeks ain't bad.

They've changed our time off so much over the last few years. I get a lot of it, but it accrues...and I have to use it all by the end of the year. I'm also not allowed to borrow time. So that means 1) If I wanted to take a vacation in January, I'm screwed. and 2) I have to take a bunch of time off toward the end of the year to use it before it expires. It's less of a big deal in my current job role than it was in the one prior, where our team needed coverage and too many people taking time off at the same time was a problem.

I can't complain about time off, as I get a lot of it. The ONLY downside is that the time off is predetermined by the school calendar (which doesn't align with my kids' school calendars, so vacations over Spring Break, for example, are impossible).

My wife is a consultant, so she can take as much time off as she wants to so long as she maintains a certain percentage of utilization. She has looked at some other jobs recently, but the idea of reverting back to a standard 2 weeks off has kept her where she is

This isn't a work gripe per se, but it made me extra tired at work, so I'm making it a work gripe, dammit:

Somebody who lives on the same floor as me must have ended up with a skunked dog this morning, because I actually woke up a good hour and a half before my alarm because a skunk funk was flooding the whole floor. At first I thought somebody somehow managed to run over one in the parking lot and it exploded based on how bad it was (again, it horsefeathering woke me up with the power of its skunkiness!), but [expletive], I think it was just a skunky dog spending time in the hallway based on how much ridiculously skunkier it was out there when I finally left. I'm mildly worried I'm going to get home tonight and the whole 4th floor is still going to be skunkedified.
