Verizon Strike

Postby grassbass » Wed Apr 13, 2016 2:34 pm

This whole union strike for Verizon horsefeathering sucks. Both sides of this issue have been complete horsefeathering idiots in the way they've handled this entire situation.

One of the most asinine parts of this entire situation is that Verizon is making it's office employees go out and do the work of the union. My wife works as an IT project manager, and starting this morning, she has to work 12-hour days doing Fios in-home repair/service. If the strike continues for awhile, she won't get a day off until she's worked 14 straight 12-hour days. While the money she'll rake in is great, that's the only real upside to this. Our kids will be lucky to see her for 30 minutes a day.

We actually lucked out a bit in that she gets to work fairly close to home. Other people are being sent hours away from their families and will be lucky to come home for a day once every two weeks.

Presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) boosted the cause of striking Verizon workers on Wednesday, joining them on a picket line in New York City and blasting the telecom giant in a sidewalk speech.

I'm not anti-union here. While I disagree with some of the things the union is asking for, the majority of my complaints are how Verizon is handling this.

Although from what I've been told, they've had some people cross the picket line already.

When this happened five years ago, it lasted 13 days before the union decided to go back to work without a contract and continue negotiations. During the time leading up to the strike, Verizon had it's office employees go through training, including Fios repair/installation, outside cable repair (climbing telephone poles), etc. They had a woman in her 60s fall off a horsefeathering ladder and break her back during training.

I'm not changing my services, but that company sounds like it's run by a bunch of dick heads.

The worst year of my life I managed 4 inpatient pediatric psych units at a children's hospital. Although I had a lot of responsibility, I was pretty much in middle management. The nurses were trying to organize a union and the parent company to the hospital was flipping out. If the hospital nurses were able to organize at our small hospital then it would cause a cascade along the entire chain of hospitals. So, I had to go through "union training". It was like a combination of the McCarthy hearings and spy school. Anyone who showed the least amount of sympathy for the union were fired within a few months (I lied my ass off). And I was supposed to go around to my subordinates and 1) tell them about how terrible unions are and 2) tell the hospital lawyer if they were pro or anti-union. I had to write weekly reports to the lawyer who was in charge of the union busting on what I knew and how many people were with the union. My bosses never told me directly, but they pretty much made it clear that I was to make work life miserable for the pro-union people. I spent a sizable portion of my work day spying on people instead of making sure the quality of care was up to standard. Needless to say I started thinking about my job choice pretty quickly. A few months after I left, the company was fined for what they were doing, and had to pay a settlement to a nurse that was fired.

The worst thing was that if they just listened to what the nurses were saying and made a few changes they would not had to go through all that. It was awful.

We have to sign a "I promise never to unionize" agreement when we get hired at my country. I'm guessing it's not a legally binding agreement, even in a right-to-work state
