My Dog is Getting Old

Postby Derwood » Fri Jan 22, 2016 3:06 pm

My dog is 13 1/2 years old. Older than my kids. He's a Yorkshire Terrier who has lost most of his teeth and one of his eyes. He can no longer hold his bladder and is starting to pee all over the house. I don't mind him peeing downstairs that much, as we're ripping all of that carpet out here soon, but the upstairs carpet isn't in the budget to replace. Couple this with the fact that he's always really thirsty, and it's a bad situation for the dog. He's losing his senses of hearing and smell. It's sad to see.

On the bright side, he's still mobile. He can get up and down the stairs no problem and still randomly attacks/plays with his food like he's stalking prey. He doesn't appear to be in any pain.

I love dogs. I've had this dog for a long time. Yay dogs

Yorkies have an expected lifespan of 13-16 years, so we're officially in the danger zone. When he eventually passes it's going to suck, especially for my daughters, who have never known life without this dog

i visited my parents for mlk day weekend, and their dog that i lived with for a bit too aged terribly in the year since i last saw her. she's in good spirits, but she has some neurological disorder where she basically drags her back feet. she still gets around, but when she gets excited she loses her balance and falls, but she gets right back up and wants to play. it was heartbreaking. when i left i probably hugged her for 2 minutes because it's likely the last i'll see her. :(

My 10 year old Feist dog is starting to have his yellow face fur turn white. It depresses me. Not looking forward to the next few years.

My Jack Russell made it just short of 16 years and it is the most heartbreaking thing to see their body go before their mind.

This is really old, but they're definitely buddies. Daughter is almost 8 and the dog is 12. I think it'll crush her when she goes.

So sorry for your loss. Beagles are truly the best.

I adopted Wrigley a couple years back. He walked up to a warehouse place where a friend of mine worked during his third shift stint. Obviously nobody knows for sure, but my theory (and nobody can tell me otherwise so it's basically gospel as far as I'm concerned) is that some horsefeathers hunter let him go because he (Wrigley) was quite obviously sick and unable to pay dividends for his horsefeathers hobby. Anyway, my friend and his wife had another dog (who is a bit of a diva) and I had zero dogs so that was that.

I did what I could, but ultimately the heartworms were far too advanced by the time he found me. Bless his heart, he would do everything in his power to crawl in my lap 24/7, rest his head against mine in bed, he was just so absolutely horsefeathering happy that someone showed him any love and attention. To this day I've never encountered any other creature so thankful for just simply being loved and shown care for.

In a probably feeble attempt to re-direct and save this thread, I will say that Wrigley packed major heat. And while he never seemed to feel good psychically-speaking, he seemed to always passive aggressively make the "bigger" (i.e. by mass and non-schlong standards) dogs jealous. The little guy was swaggy as hell.

my dog ate a bunch of individually foil wrapped reese's mini peanut butter cups recently and I deprived her of dinner afterward. She lapped up a couple extra bowls of water and crapped straight black the next time out but none the worse for wear.

My dog now has to be quarantined to the bathroom while we're out of the house because he's peeing and pooping everywhere. I just tore out all the first floor carpet and replaced it with wood, and he almost ruined that already.

My incontinent 14 year old Lab was making messes all over our carpet downstairs, so we tore it all out. I bought hard wood to replace, but I wasn't doing it while she was still alive and making messes. 2 years went by and I had a concrete floor. She passed, I put down the new hardwood, and now my other dogs are making messes on the floor. Argh!
