[Brainstorm] HR Derby Changes/Updates

Postby Southpaw19 » Wed Oct 03, 2018 6:49 pm

I do have a life, and yes it gets busy at times, but I still enjoy running the NSBB HR Derby every season. Maybe one of these years I'll finish in the Top 5.

That being said, as we approach the 13th (documented) season of Home Run Derby... I'd like to ask everyone what they'd like to see changed / added / updated / removed /etc. to brainstorm some good ideas.

I will then see what makes sense, and implement as needed.

Other than me never learning from past mistakes, I see nothing wrong with it. The inclusion of the wiki page this year was very nice, thank you for doing that.

I'm trying to figure out a way where we could somehow have trades, but I can't quite make it work.

I stole your idea and do a derby at work. We've made little tweaks over the years; things like expanding team sizes and awarding first and second half winners.

The big one we did, which I'm not sure would even be possible with the larger number of participants here, is instituting a draft so all teams are unique. It worked great for our small derby, but it might ruin this one.

I kinda like that idea; it's seemed like the last 2 seasons there's a LOT of really similar teams. Obviously, it doesn't keep everyone bunched up, as we've seen, but maybe it would mix things up nicely.

In theory, I like the idea of a draft, however we would end up with more teams that cannot compete. First and second half winners would work, if we were giving out prizes like the old days.

Expanding the rosters might work... I'll have to think on that one.

If we’re just wanting to mix things up, how about scrapping the “tiers” of players and changing it so everyone has to have a complete “team” of fielders? Three outfielders plus the five infielders and a DH.

Then, when you make a transaction, it has to be for the same position. If Anthony Rizzo gets hurt, you can only replace him with another first baseman. The DH slot could have any position (like a flex position in fantasy football).

Trade HRs for roster moves is the only thing I can think of.

Team A trades 5 HRs to Team B for 1 of their roster moves.

That just seems like more work for Southpaw though.

I like the current format and the Wiki page was great.

the wild card only changing once, midseason usually seems to inordinately torpedo the season for a lot of teams

it's more pronounced if you have an injury or unexpected playing time split that you can't recover from

This could get some consideration ... I like the idea.

Okay - I've mapped some stuff out and here's the problem with teams by position instead of tiers.
Unless you want to have a team different than everyone else, you wind up with a team full of "A" players.
Not saying that they'd all stay to form from 2018, but you never know.

Thoughts?

Maybe keep a “Tier A” of 5-8 players that everyone is limited to just one of, and then fill out the rest of the team (so you can’t have Stanton, Judge and Trout as your outfield)

Or keep the tiers and the by-tier requirements but also make it a requirement that you have to field all 8 positions with your team

We could tier it by position (idk exactly how you'd determine the cutoffs, maybe top ~6 in HRs at each position?) but you could only pick say 2 players from tier A for 2 positions of your choice, 3 from tier B for 3 positions of your choice then the rest of you lineup/positions needs to be on tier C or lower players? Still could allow for 1 WC pick too for a position.

Another way to do this would be make it a salary cap thing. That way you don’t need to break all the positions down and could be your tiers how they are now just denote the position a guy qualified for in what you currently have. Everyone gets say up to $1,000 SouthPaw bucks to spend on their team and can’t exceed (except for substitutes in season?) then Tier A players cost $150-200, Tier B $75-100, Tier C $50-75, Tier D $25-50 (rough guesses on what the value should be) and maybe your WC doesn’t count towards your payroll?
