David Ross

Postby JennieGarthAlgar » Mon Sep 26, 2016 1:49 pm

I rolled my eyes shortly after we signed Lester and when I read that Ross would likely be coming with him. I was really turned on to the idea of having a Montero and Wellington Castillo platoon at catcher, and knew that meant we would be giving up some offense just to satiate Lester. Sometimes I think "clubhouse chemistry" is overblown, but in this instance I really wonder where our team would be at right now without Rossy here the past 2 seasons helping keep everyone loose and showing the young guys how to be a great teammate.

I've convinced myself that the Cubs are going very, very far this year and then watch Dave Martinez leave for a managerial job, opening a spot up for Rossy. This has to happen, right? Or will he have to go the 'FO Special Assistant' role, first? At this point I'd be so bummed if he ended up taking a job in a different organization or even takes a year off to enjoy retirement. I feel like he could be an important behind the scenes piece to this team's success the next couple years.

I love everything about this. He's not a HOF, or even an All-Star. What he is, is a great person, great teammate, great coach, great motivator, great defensive catcher with great personality and intangibles.

Awesome send-off for Ross and definitely deserved. I really hope he comes back as a coach next year, but I can completely understand if he needs a year away from the game. We'll be waiting for him with a coaching position open for whenever he wants it.

Has there been any word on who Lester will trust to catch his pitches next year? The David Ross era certainly didn't go as expected. And that's a good thing! It makes me happy! I do hope he comes back as a coach in the near future.

I'm expecting/kinda hoping that Montero is the go-to Lester/Jake guy next year.

The fact that Martinez hasn't got a manager job by now leads me to believe it probably isn't going to happen. There is clearly something about him that hasn't won teams over in the interview process. His name doesn't even get mentioned for openings any more the same way it did a few years ago.

Din't he interview with the Dodgers just last year?

He may never become a manager, but to say because he hasn't been one by now is the reason why you don't think he will ever be one is kind of crazy. A WS win tends to make guys more desired. But time will tell, I suppose.

I think it's a safe bet he'll take a year off to relax with his family, probably make a spring training appearance to help out the guys, and pop in from time to time at Wrigley or wherever. It wouldn't shock me to see him do some analyst work on MLB network, ESPN, etc. next year. He definitely has the personality for it.

I've heard several baseball people say that Ross could very well make the leap straight to being a head coach, he's that well respected in baseball circles and has the knowledge and ability to make the jump right in.

Bottom line, if he wants to be a coach in the future, he'll have plenty of suitors.

He could definitely do TV. They did a "live" interview with him during an LDS game and he was terrific

Yeah, that was what I was basing my opinion on as well as numerous interviews throughout the year. He'd make a great analyst.

Look, I'm as big a critic of sloppy journalism as anyone, but that seems a bit harsh.

Ross said he's retiring for family reasons. I don't think he wants to be away from family.

Home run in Game 7 to help break the Cubs' curse. Can't think of a better way to go out.

I think after being in baseball for 17 years, it can take its toll from a family perspective. Good for him for realizing what's most important in life.

For a journeyman like him, how ridiculously amazing is it to hit a home run in your final career AB in game 7 of the World Series.
