The Cubs announce that they've agreed to a 5 year, $100m contract with Tomohiro Kuroki.

Turns out Otani hates him so much that he's willing to sacrifice potentially over a hundred million dollars to get away from him. We lose.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

anyone know when the FO suggested Bosio would return or is he just making stuff up?

if it's based on Theo saying it was up to Joe what coaches returned? because that's not that.

Probably based on the quote from Joe saying that he likes all the coaches and wanted them all back. Either way it's silly, it's not like they waited for jobs to dry up before taking action, they were still playing less than 48 hours ago.

I'm going to take a different take here, but I'm actually kind of happy we let Bosio go. I definitely hated listening to his interviews on the radio. I don't know exactly how much of an impact he had on our pitching staff, but he doesn't seem like the next L. Mazzone-level pitching coach.

Most instructors and coaches are replaceable, and maybe a new voice and pitching philosophy will help our staff next season.

Never know what could have happened between Thursday and this morning too. Maybe in doing an exit interview or something with Bosio they just didn’t like how it went/where it was going.

Do coaches and instructors do exit interviews? I'm honestly not sure. I'm assuming J. Maddon is in conversation with Theo and Jed constantly so doing an exit interview for him isn't really necessary.

I guess you should do exit interviews with the coaching staff and other instructors though.

We've been out of the playoffs for like three days. Were they supposed to say they were going to fire him while we were still playing?

There has been a lot of talk that they were replacing Bosio because of the Thames suspension or just to bring in Hickey, but this is the first thing I thought of when I heard the news.

Im not saying it’s just because of that isolated incident, but I’d be shocked if that type of attitude didn’t rub the pitchers the wrong way.

I do find it interesting and not surprising that in the year of the juiced ball that we see a ton of quality pitching coaches fired. I don’t think that’s the reason that Bosio is gone, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there were other teams overreacting.

During a "Not For Women Only" panel discussion, former Cubs pitcher Mike Bielecki asked several players to invent a baseball catch phrase for Viagra. Theriot's ad campaign: "Viagra -- I always play hard."

If the Pitching Coach sets the pitching strategy for the team, then I think we did have a very serious problem. I'd be interested to see the numbers, but watching the games I thought our staff spent a lot of time trying to nibble the edges of the plate and failed at getting strike 1 routinely. We all complained about the ridiculous Dodger at bats where our pitches were on the edge (and the calls often admittedly sucked at times) and they'd manage to work us deep into counts. If Bosio was responsible for a more conservative approach from the rubber that led to our opponents being able to set the offensive tone (certainly felt like it), then yeah, he either needed to change his philosophy, or go.

Maybe this is what Theo saw: that our staff's approach was trying to be too fine and it led to too many bad innings.

You'd also have to think this gives us a better chance to get Brett Anderson back via free agency.

Not saying it will happen, but the Cubs coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series does seem like the appropriate way to cap off this season and make the 30-for-30 even better.

who cares. if theo fired him then it probably made sense to do that. i find it hard to even pretend like i could possibly know enough about a pitching coach to care about this. also he's kind of a douche and he did embarrass the organization a little bit.

This feels like it's set for Hickey, if he wants it (makes me sorta wonder if Bosio is fired if Hickey isn't available.) At the end of the day, there's only so much a pitching coach can do, and a new voice is a fine swap. Sometimes pitching coaches don't mesh, sometimes it takes time (Roger McDowell really didn't connect well with Kevin Gausman this year, by most accounts, and back in the day for the Orioles, don't recall who, but Arrieta/Matusz/Tillman/Britton and Co. pretty much hated their pitching coach), and sometimes you need new guys. Hickey is well-regarded, although I do find it mildly interesting that Hickey was let go somewhat because they felt that they had a better voice to guide their young guys coming up, like Honeywell, in Snyder.

I imagine Bosio is probably going to find a landing spot soon.

Tbh, I wouldn't mind Farrell or Mike Maddux, if Hickey opted against coming here. That said, his close relationship with Maddon really seems to suggest a high probability that this is his if he wants it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Maddon had reached out to Hickey prior to Bosio being fired. This may all be window dressing for whats essentially a done deal.

I'd think Alex Cobb would be the most likely in this scenario.

What does he say about his pitching philosophy (Hickey) and how he handles pitchers? I also wouldn't mind interviewing M. Maddux and J. Farrell and seeing which one would be the best fit.

The job does seem to be Hickey's if he wants it though.
