2018 Cubs Bold Predictions Thread

Postby David » Thu Mar 22, 2018 3:31 pm

We've got a week to go before the opener, so let's go ahead and do this.

Bryant, Rizzo, and Schwarber combine for 110 HR
Cubs score 900 runs
Chatwood posts an ERA in the 2's
Cubs win 105 games
Darvish wins NL Cy Young
Hendricks posts his best FIP/xFIP

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

Cubs win 107 games
Bryant puts up the most WAR in the NL
Schwarber slashes at least .260/.370/.500
Contreras puts up the highest WAR for catchers in MLB
Russell puts up at least a .260/.330/.450 slash line with 20+ HRs and 4.5 WAR
Bullpen finishes top 3-5 in most metrics
Every starter has an ERA under 3.6 and WAR over 3
Happ is the best non-Bryzzo/Contreras position player by WAR
Heyward posts a wOBA of at least .330
Maples turns in to Marmol 2.0 (the good kind)
We lead the league or are top 5 in most major categories for offense, defense and pitching.

- Javy reduces his K-rate below 22%; puts up OPS over .850
- Zobrist retires at the end of the year, freeing up some cash for Harper
- Russell breaks through to a .275/.350/.475 line
- Bryant wins NL MVP with his best line yet; tops 40 HR
- Schwarber out-OPS's him
- Cubs score most runs in NL and allow the fewest runs in NL
- Cubs win 107 games

The Cubs winning less than 100 games might be the boldest prediction of all.

Schwarber hits 89 home runs
Rizzo and Bryant each hit 73
Darvish doesn't allow a run all season
Hendricks starts wearing Maddux's jersey and wins 28 games
Contreras hits a 750 foot homerun
Javy tags Ryan Braun out so hard he explodes into coins like a Mario villain.

Cubs win 140 games, win World Series, have the parade in Milwaukee to rub it in

- Montgomery makes more starts than 2 of the current rotation due to injury
- Rizzo, Bryant, Contreras, and Schwarber all post wOBAs north of .370
- Edwards gets used in Andrew Miller like fashion down the stretch as the team's best reliever, Duensing is off the roster by August

You can't just say stuff. You have to write an article outlining real facts that could lead to that projection. That is your gift. Find a way.
I want real reasons their players could do well. This is your greatest challenge yet and will be your masterpiece.

or don't...

we don't really need your help on this one.

Remember that time Z no-hit the Astros in Milwaukee just for a lark? There is precedent!

The Cubs' combined IF has the best WAR in baseball.
The Cubs' combined OF combined has the best WAR in the NL.
Cubs win 115 games and sweep the Stros in the WS.
Dempster retires his Harry impersonation.
World Peace is achieved.

Naw man...I mean, I always think of "the Cubs" as just one Cub entity. Like, "that's so Cub!" Damn it, this isn't working.

Mostly what's already here...

- Best offense in the MLB, sets the NL HR record
- Bryant and Rizzo both go .300+/.400+
- Schwarber mashes
- Darvish wins the Cy Young
- Edwards becomes a fireman, bullpen is sum of its parts excellent
- Strop falters
- Heyward hits
- Montogomery logs 150 innings including 15-20 starts
- Some kind of big trade at the deadline
