https://www.cubsinsider.com/2020/12/06/ ... t-process/

“How I would define the pitching lab is an infrastructure, and a kind of physical structure, that collaborates across multiple departments and enables us to pursue, fairly aggressively, initiatives that will allow us to optimize our pitchers either through pitch data, through pitch delivery, or even potentially gleaning information about usage and location.”

...

“There are certainly examples, and fairly well-documented examples, of grip changes that have been employed and very targeted instances with particular pitchers,” Breslow explained. “We also have the opportunity to explore the biomechanical component of the delivery and the ways that those are inextricably interconnected is a frontier in which I think we are gaining better understanding.”

Over the past two summers, the results of the pitch lab have been significant, especially in the bullpen. Cub fans have seen pitchers like Rowan Wick, Ryan Tepera, and Adbert Alzolay take off at the major league level by developing new pitches or better sequencing their existing repertoire.

....

“For us, it’s absolutely become a critical component of our development apparatus and also of our big league infrastructure,” Breslow said. “I think it represents an opportunity to push development across all levels, it enables us to give real-time feedback to what we’re seeing and what our pitchers are feeling.”

He mentioned that the pandemic was sort of like a “silver lining” as the Cubs streamlined their development process and formalized communications that allowed the staff to coach remotely. Those changes allowed for what he called a “proof of concept” that lets the Cubs track data, goals, and initiatives while measuring the organization’s own methodology and process.

Interview 24:50:

- Like Hoyer, seems extremely confident they made alot of gains top to bottom in 2020 despite the pandemic conditions.

- Keeping that thread Epstein started even before the pandemic and MiL coup, went out of his way to emphasize player development at the ML level was a little less direct than Epstein about how dramatic that shift is

- Says the game hasn't incentivized contact hitting in recent years but that, if it did, there would be a generation of young hitters out there who make the adjustment. He isn't limited to just pitching as an Asst. GM, believes there's more on pitching than hitting right now

- Talked about pitcher workloads: Cubs want pitchers to throw, have to be trained early (coughRichardGallardocough) to get those 200+ and playoff rotation arms, overuse unfairly overshadows being under worked when it comes to pitcher injuries, big 200+ workloads aren't for everybody obviously but also you're not going to get any by having minor leaguers capped at twice through the lineup or some similar philosophy....Good stuff IMO

- Summed up philosophically that the FO's job is to create as much room for error as possible in a given year. Sounds fair?

I actually kind of hope Porter gets the Mets' job. I don't want the new GM to go to be a Theo/Jed retread. Of the names we've heard connected to the job, give me Billy Owens.

ZiPS *hates* the pitching staff. My god. Even Yu and Kyle it likes but has pretty modest innings totals for. On the offensive side, no one projects as a star anymore. Rizzo and Baez each project at 3.3 WAR to lead the team.

Our only hope is that they rearrange the schedule like last year so we only play other Central division teams.

How did their projections for last year do against how our pitching staff actually performed? I guess thats hard to figure out since the season was so short, but I'm at the point where I dont care how bad they are projecting our pen to be...we've obviously been able to cobble together something resembling a solid bullpen most seasons. I'm not sure if a projection system can account for the Cubs scooping up trash heap guys and quickly rebuilding them into passable bullpen arms. All teams do this to some extent but it seems like the Cubs either manage to do it more, or have a higher success rate.

Fantastic read. Every time he speaks it becomes obvious why Breslow is rocketing up this organization.

Yeah the problem is two parts IMO. First, the depth chart has to settle on 8 names, whereas in reality there's probably 3-4 spots that are truly up for grabs, and will be dictated by in season performance. Second is that these are 50th percentile projections. If the Cubs have 10 arms competing for those last three spots like they did last year, you expect one guy to hit his 90th percentile projection, one to hit his 80th, etc. So while these 8 names mean out to a fairly crummy projection, in reality the stock portfolio approach to bullpen arms is gonna net out much better than this, though potentially not til after a pretty rocky start. And that's giving the Cubs zero credit for any Rays' style devil magic.

I imagine this year we're going to see if that approach works for the rotation. I expect Jed will bring in a veteran or three, at least one good enough to be pencilled into a spot. But at least two spots are gonna be a battle royale, with Mills and Alzolay the favorites but not having particularly long leashes.

Sounds like it will happen in season when they can face to face meet. I honestly don’t think it’s that big of a deal to go through the offseason without one. Jed/Kantroviz and whoever else can handle things. And taking a longer look at potential hires and really surveying things and meeting with as many people as possible is probably the smartest thing vs rushing in to a hire that isn’t overly necessary right now.

Eventually we're going to have stop pretending that our GM is a president. They're not going to give Boston more compensation retroactively.

Why not? We did when Schwarber was in left.

Just kidding. I shouldn’t have done that. You’re in enough pain given your username.

Eh, it’s like my fifth name. At this point I should just revert back to Aramis. Sad to see Schwarbs go though.
