The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

didn't think this was mentioned elsewhere but figured it may just barely be newsworthy and somewhat interesting:

The Cubs have a pair of former players entering their front office, per a club announcement. MLB veterans Chris Denorfia and Matt Murton have been named, respectively, as special assistant to the president/GM and baseball operations assistant. Denorfia, a ten-year big-leaguer, spent just one year in Chicago — his final campaign in the majors, 2015. Murton, meanwhile, broke into the majors with the Cubs but mostly found success abroad as a member of Japan’s Hanshin Tigers.

Very interesting. Makes sense for Yu to incorporate that since he goes strictly out of the stretch now to throw in some deception/different timing for hitters. Seems like a good blend of going to the stretch to simplify and repeat mechanics but still keep some benefits of the wind up for deception.

Same principle, but doesn't feel like as much of a "copy" as Darvish.

Darvish's hesitation is a balk. The odds of it being called are very low, but he's not moving anything when he stops his leg.

I was watching it again and the leg definitely comes to a complete stop, but there is still some slight movement in his upper-body area/arms. It's not as smooth as Kershaw's motion for sure.

I really hate the balk and it's really hard to determine whether a pitcher committed a balk or not in some cases. I don't believe umps will call a balk on Darvish as long as he doesn't pause that leg motion for too long.

It's just hard to determine when a pitcher commits a balk, and I feel like the rule needs to be clarified. Sometimes it feels too arbitrary when it is actually called on a pitcher.

I guess I have a problem with human umps and how they call it moreso than the balk itself. I understand why the rule exists. I don't want to get rid it.

A few years ago the NBA clarified what constitutes "traveling" and how many steps a player is allowed to take after ending their dribble. They released video of NBA players that weren't called for a traveling violation, but should have under the rules. It's a similar rule or violation that is difficult to call in real-time, and NBA refs make mistakes just like MLB umps.

Lay off Clark. He's Donald Ducking it. It's a classic look.

During a "Not For Women Only" panel discussion, former Cubs pitcher Mike Bielecki asked several players to invent a baseball catch phrase for Viagra. Theriot's ad campaign: "Viagra -- I always play hard."
