Guest stars as themselves(Michael Jackson excepted)

holy horsefeathers yes

They were doing that all along, but something definitely changed once they hit the double digit seasons when it seemed more like they were trying to bend over backwards more and more to awkwardly fit big names on the show instead of either giving them a character to play or doing something weird playing themselves.

But a quick scan of this shows it does not work as a flat rule:

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

The celebrities who played themselves weren't the focus of the show, usually there for literally one joke, then or in any of those earlier episodes. Baldwin/Basinger were co-stars of their episode.

There was also a very Austin Powers Goldmember (has to be a better analogy) type usage where the existence of the celebrity themselves was apparently supposed to be funny. The tennis episode might have been my breaking point. Oh look it's the Williams sisters, isn't that crazy!

I mean, this whole tangent started because of the baseball episode, so I both kinda agree and disagree with this. Something like "Krusty Gets Kancelled" lives and dies with celebrity cameos, and it's one of the all-time greats. Plus that Baldwin one was pretty weird in how the celebrity guests were in, like, the entire episode as themselves. I can think of the Mel Gibson one like that, too, but most of the later season episodes I've seen that have celebrity voices still tend to use them for just cameos; there's just no joke beyond, like you said, "it's this famous person!"

Later writers just didn't have as good a handle on the whole "celebrities playing themselves" thing. Like, the celebrity shows up, and then a character on the show has to comment on who they are; that's usually a sign it's a bad era.

I don't know if you caught my edit or not, but it's basically your 2nd point.

hate to out David you with knowing too much about their personal lives, but I'm pretty sure he's also his step-son from his wifes previous marriage... which I think makes it better.

D.A.V.I.D. ERROR REPORTING SYSTEM

this is probably a driver update issue or something, but the creep matrix is definitely offline or at least running sub-optimally if humans are outperforming it in recognizing the familial status of people in pictures with athletes.

It would be culturally insensitive for him to dress as John Lackey unless he too eats children.

Bad wording on my part...I just meant it "as an alternative", but I don't think that's right now that I think about it.
