It’s not a surprise but this twitter thread pretty much sums up how I feel now. Which I’ve already made clear.

I agree with the general point that many Chicago reporters are monsters but Darvish has a 4.95 ERA.

Darvish sucks right now, hopefully he turns it around. I don’t think the Chicago reporters are leading this charge, his performance is.

Yu needs to put his big boy shorts on (or pants, if you don’t like shorts).

Seems like every start going in to there’s the tweets and articles by the usual idiots about the 5th inning mental stuff, after every game there’s a mention of the mental stuff (regardless of good or bad start). The Score is all over this mental stuff to. Idk, I’ve seen a lot of it. It’s by the awful hack guys that shouldn’t be taken seriously, but they have a large reach and it’s clearly hit an audience (even if it’s a vocal minority) that now it’s gotten to Yu. Every article in Spring was focused around him being mentally weak and soft and building in the narrative he’s soft if things went bad early too.

You have to admit that Yu hasn't done anything on the field to disprove the "mentally weak and soft" label. Sports is a really big deal in Chicago, so these guys need to come up with a "story" whether it's reporting facts or opinions. It's even worse with Bears' coverage where we get "stories" for months before training camp and weeks of speculation before the draft.

I am torn between "Chicago media are aggressively dumb dolts" and "Yu it's been 2 months and you barely speak conversational English and you can even tell yourself they're chanting 'Yuuuu', how are you at the point you earnestly think the city hates you"

There are a lot of big cities that care far less about sports than Chicago. In California, for example.

That doesn’t mean they don’t have idiotic sportswriters driving a narrative for their canvases. See Plashcke v. DePodesta

No argument here. Sportswriters are idiotic just about everywhere.

just look at how easily cubs fans can get into road playoff games usually too. atlanta couldn't sell out damn playoff games.

Yeah, great arguments made there. Other teams have been doing a lot of BS to the Cubs (like hitting our star players in the head with pitches and screaming after bases empty strike outs) and I've had enough of it! Can't root for the Cubs anymore.

You guys are flat out nuts if you don't think all of those markets don't have terrible, obsessive sports media out the wazoo. Atlanta's got three miserable sports radio stations just like the Vaunted Chicago Sports Market. Florida has three dozen(!!!!) sports stations. California has twenty seven.

Illinois? Only a whopping fifteen, less than the twenty that can be found here in Virginia.

No one is arguing that other markets don't have terrible, obsessive sports media people. You implied that sports in other places were "a really big deal" everywhere, which isn't true.

Also, the number of sports stations doesn't necessarily speak to obsession, it speaks to concentration.

In terms of jackhole local newspaper humps, bloggers and radio/TV guys looking to fill space/time? Absolutely. Obviously nobody was talking about in the context of how many people regularly show up to the games, so that was just a pointless tangent to begin with. All of these markets, however, have obsessive local media outlets picking over the local teams and players. Chicago is nothing special in that regard, and it's an absurdly lame bit of masochistic egotism to think so.

I mean, what the heck do you guys think the (actually) four sports stations in Atlanta talk about? "Uhm, I dunno...maybe we'll talk about sports eventually. Does anyone else really like Coke and flying on Delta?"

I know I’m responsible for starting this topic and my point really wasn’t to say Chicago has it so much worse. There’s certainly awful writers everywhere. My point was it seems like there’s especially a lot of bad writers currently in Chicago/covering the Cubs and I didn’t know if it was that bad everywhere else. There’s like 6-8+ guys running with the Darvish mental midget narrative since Spring along with looking for every negative angle to take with the team and baseless, idiotic claims/narratives.

I mean Theo had to go on the radio last week to tell these idiots to shut up about the stupid Russell+ for Machado rumors they started out of thin air.

I'm pretty sure four hideous sports stations in a single city with a metro population of only around 5 million people aren't just existing in a type of howling, empty void.

Hello from Orange County, California. We've got 3 million people. We've got two sports radio stations, but they rarely run local content. It's almost always national syndicated stuff until it's time for an Angels or Ducks, and then they get a pre-game show of one or two hours. It's all generic PR stuff. The teams sell enough tickets and do enough TV ratings to keep the lights on, but it's not something the whole area gets caught up in.

If there's some frothing racist Kaplan equivalent waiting for Otani to fall apart, I haven't run across them.

The one exception to this rule is probably Southern California. Although this part of the country did create Jim Rome.

Other than that, stupid sports media and sports BEING IMPORTANT is universal.
