i suppose the fact that they specifically went out of their way (and against the norm) to visit while obama was still in office (although he had something to do with it too, iirc) is better than most MLB teams probably would've done, but yeah, that second visit still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

for me it isn't really a political issue (in other words, i wouldn't care with literally any other president) so much as a trump is a terrible monstrous buffoon issue. nobody should visit him. the absurdity of everything coming from that administration on a near daily basis is almost beyond my comprehension.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

Yeah. Like, I get that the Astros still went*; I get why any team would up sending some kind of representation for a WH visit regardless of who is in office (though I would prefer as many people opting out as possible just for basic human decency). The unforgivable part to me is that the Cubs got their WH visit and then inexplicably went back a second time.

if only there wasn't some incredibly dumb political controversy in baseball, then Carl going to see dinosaur museums instead of visiting the Trump WH could've gotten a similar response as the Eagles.

I’m hoping he can be a bullpen option around August +/- a few weeks and obviously a potential playoff contributor

Tuesday's 6-1 loss was only the 6th loss this year by 4 or more runs, compared to 19 wins by 4 or more.
Over the last calendar month, RD is at +70. (In the same time frame, Yankees are +25, Astros are +55, Red Sox are +35)

28-16 their last 44 games with a 5-game losing streak in the middle. Should have won at least 2 of the games in that losing streak.

The only unsustainable thing I see during that stretch is the relatively low amount of runs allowed by Chatwood. He’s got to find a way to get his walk rate cut at least in half.

So let it be written, so let in be done. 10-2 is a nice start

It's looking like Montgomery is forcing his way into the starting rotation. TT is driving the bandwagon, but I'm definitely on board.

The Cubs will probably want to watch his innings closely. Last year, he pitched 130 innings, so I would think a 20% increase to 150 innings is probably a fair limit for this year. He has already pitched 43 innings. With 100 games left in the year, if he started every 5th game, he would start 20 more games this year, which would put him at about 160 innings for the regular season.

We need to keep him fresh for the postseason and beyond, so I would think letting him throw 160 innings during the regular season would be risking fatigue or worse. How do the Cubs limit his innings? They could switch to a six man rotation when Darvish returns, but this would only reduce about 3 starts from his work load. They could also limit him to about 80 pitches per start so he would only pitche about 5 innings per start. That would get his innings to about 125, which would keep him available for the postseason. However with Chatwood as one of the other 6 in the rotation, having 2 pitchers in the rotation that can only be expected to go 5 innings could burn out the bullpen. Fortunately the depth for the bullpen has been incredible, but overuse is still a legitimate concern.

Is there another solution, I'm not thinking of? Could they do a modified piggy back thing with some of the arms?

Are there too many variables, so there's no perfect answer, and I've already put too much thought into this? Most definitely, but I'm bored at work and need to do something to pass the time.

Assuming no other injuries I’d say I’m almost certain Monty will be back in his swing man role once Darvish is back. That’s where he’s most valuable. We have some long stretches of games in the 2nd half (and a double header or two) so it wouldn’t surprise me to see him get some more starts when the rotation is at full health to get everyone an extra day of rest or out of necessity for the DH’s.

130 to 160 innings isn't that obnoxious a jump either, and Montgomery has slim odds of significant postseason innings. I don't think managing his workload, even in an optimistic case where he locks down a rotation spot for the rest of the year, is a big need.

I'm afraid you're right, that he will probably go back to being a swing man. I don't agree that he's more valuable in that role though. I haven't looked at the numbers but he doesn't usually pitch in high leverage situations as a reliever, his stuff also doesn't seem to play up that much out of the pen versus starting, so I think he provides more value as a starter.

He’s still going to get starts even with everyone healthy. He’s best suited in relief with what we have though. Don’t think Chatwood should come out of the pen with his control issues. Monty’s ERA is a littler over 1 run lower as a RP vs SP and his FIP is about .7 lower. I’m pretty sure his FB plays up out of the pen, pretty sure he’s more 94-96 on the FB out of relief vs 91-93 as a starter.
