For athletes that need their bodies working as best as possible and specifically pitchers and their arms, I don’t get why you aren’t doing all the reasonable tests out there when guys tell you somethubg hurts to get to the bottom of it. If you know there’s 2-3 scans that will show you the cause, but some can miss certain injuries why not do all them? I’m not saying go cut a guy open and dig around until you find something.

I would say it’s even more important to treat an athlete’s body as carefully as possible. Actually I wouldn’t say that but only because everyone matters and no one should be rushed into getting blasted with X-rays to then be cut open. Pitchers *especially* in this sport are such finely tuned athletes that teams should be even more slow to react and throw something so intense at their bodies. To you it’s 2-3 scans, a couple sentences to read, but to the patient it’s real time (procedure, recovery, physical and mental rehab), real radiation, real incisions...Throw in that you’re doing this all to a person who has made their life and living on physical prowess

Sneezes...X-rays...Tomato/Tomahto? This is the kind of dismissive garbage stated when there’s zero to risk, which is not the position teams and players are in

There are forms of radiation that are continually passing through the entire earth. Obviously, too much radiation = bad. But it takes a lot of radiation to reach those levels.

Here's a quick article from Harvard Medical School: https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying- ... out-x-rays

Take that 25 CT recommendation with this understanding - that's chest CT's. A CT on the elbow won't have nearly the exposure that a chest CT would. While you shouldn't prescribe monthly CT's on every pitcher's elbow, having one whenever they are hurt enough to go onto the DL is a pretty reasonable compromise.

Its true that X-rays can make the cancers, but everything has risk. Hell, the cancer risk of being exposed to sunlight for 162 games a year is probably the same order of magnitude as a CT scan on a limb.

Not an excuse to put a person through concentrated doses probably/possibly unnecessarily, particularly given the large sums of money involved on both sides that allow for more holistic or possibly/probably modern alternatives. If you can both afford to avoid it plus still haven't eliminated all alternatives, then the easy call is to avoid. These are last resort kind of procedures

Edit: Oh boi, and there's my cue to duck out. I really must keep in mind that any impassioned disagreement is planting the seeds for a future banning. Bless the internet

If you get them drunk on top shelf stuff it negates the risk of radiation.

I'd like to know why the x ray film at the dentist is the same giant chunk of cardboard with sharp edges that I had to endure as a kid back in the 70's. Shouldn't we have better tech for that by now?

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

i remember my, like, 7th grade science teacher telling us that when he was a kid, people were so excited about x-ray technology that they were using them in shoe stores to size people for shoes.

the 40's and 50's were wild as horsefeathers with their technology, man.

What my tooth guy uses doesn't have the sharp edges anymore, but its heavier and only mildly less annoying.

horsefeathers, they used those insane things for almost half a century. You could still find a few scattered shoe stores using them in the horsefeathering 70's. They have an exhibit about them at the Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago (an awesomely creepy way to spend an afternoon), and the main problem wasn't that they were x-raying feet, but that the whole box/setup was just blasting x-rays all over the place onto the customer and the salesman.

During a "Not For Women Only" panel discussion, former Cubs pitcher Mike Bielecki asked several players to invent a baseball catch phrase for Viagra. Theriot's ad campaign: "Viagra -- I always play hard."
