Even though he'd get $10 mil in deferred signing bonus if he opts out, I think he'd be crazy to do it. Nobody is giving him 4/$76 given how free agency has gone the past couple of years.

I thought his second opt out was after year 5 of the deal (2020) but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Anyway still great to see him playing this well, obviously.

I’d love for him to opt out before the fixed baseballs turn him back into a pumpkin

I suppose it's OK to have the discussion considering it's a message board, but there is a zero percent chance Heyward opts out.

I'm just enjoying that he's having a solid season and at least one of the final five years of his contract wasn't terrible offensively. I would like to see them trade for a quality CF if that's even possible just so we can put him in RF every game, where he becomes an even better all-around player. Not sure what the metrics say, but I still don't love him in CF.

ETA: Also, in the juiced ball year, are J-Hey's numbers even that good, or just good for J-Hey?

Not saying it will happen, but the Cubs coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series does seem like the appropriate way to cap off this season and make the 30-for-30 even better.

He has a 115 wRC+ so yeah he’s been just plain good. That’s the same wRC+ as Lindor and within 1 point of Harper and Story.

OK. Cool. I just looked at the nine doubles and 15 homers and a clean slash line but nothing unreal and was just wondering if it was all that impressive.

There's like a dozen interesting CF in the league and almost all of them are on contenders. I think we're stuck with what we have. Our best shot is if Happ plays at a high level, or if we make a push for Whit.

Lately I've thought that maybe he is now comfortable with the Cubs and his contract and simply doesn't GAF and is going to be this kind of player (the player we thought we were getting) for the rest of his contract.

Would be nice. He really has improved every year at the plate for the Cubs.

That's interesting to think about. Are there any players who come to mind that signed a long-term contract with a team and pretty much sucked for the first half of it and then was good for the second, all while with the team he signed the contract with?

Even with a strong finish to the season I don't think Heyward opts out. If he were a FA this winter I think he'd be in line for something like what McCutchen got last winter. Maybe a 4th year because he's younger? Regardless that's obviously less than what he's currently owed.

That being said, he could probably be traded at this point without it being too painful. Although given the state of the outfield I can't imagine why he would be dealt unless the next two months are a complete disaster and Theo blows it all up.

I feel like I’m walking thru the desert. The blazing hot sun is beating down on me. My mouth is as dry as chalk. I need water badly. There is nothing in any direction except sand and the horizon. I feel like I can hardly take anymore steps.

Wait! Up ahead! There appears to be palm trees and I hear running water and birds singing. Right? Wait!
