Re: Cubs Manager Search
I know a lot of people are predicting Girardi and while I'm obviously not going to dismiss this outright, I think they're more interested in somebody like Ross or Loretta because they want more say in the day to day running of the team (line up construction, bull pen use, etc).
So to me they want a newer guy that they can dictate to vs an experienced manager who's not going to accept that.

I'd be pretty surprised if it isn't Ross.
Definitely won't be horsefeathering Girardi.

Re: Cubs Manager Search
I think Girardi is too much of an obvious meatball for the FO to stand; Ross manages to dip his toes both in the "let's get someone who is more of a hard ass" gimmick, as well as being someone the fans and players would like. I keep seeing DeRosa's name coming up, but I can't imagine them going after someone who cranks up the goofball public persona to the nth degree right after everyone getting fed up with Maddon's dumb antics for jerks.

Only idiots would want or be predicting Girardi. I agree with whoever they bring in it working like you laid out.

Re: Cubs Manager Search
Give me Astros bench coach Joe Espada. Widely regarded as a good communicator, has worked in both Astros and Yankees system, bilingual, and spent time in Yankees front office.
There’s been a few other candidates I’ve heard thrown around that I do like: Josh Bard, Carlos Beltran, Sam Fuld (blast from the past).
I don’t think there’s any realistic chance that they give the job to Girardi. Ross, I’m not a huge fan for this Cubs team, but whatever.

Re: Cubs Manager Search
wouldn't it be better to try Ross out as a bench coach or Iowa manager before throwing him into head honcho?

Ross probably would rather do what he's doing now than either of those things.

Re: Cubs Manager Search
The current trend seems to be to go with younger, less experienced, but WAY CHEAPER managers, which means the days of Girardi making $4-5 million/year are gone. I'd expect a "rookie with upside" manager who will cost a lot less

Yes I’d like for him to get a serious look.

With the new TV deal, he might be a perfect fit. Everything is lining up perfectly for PTR.

Also gives Sinclair a natural spokesman to be used on all the political commercials they'll be airing during games. Win win for them.

Loretta or Ross are my two guesses who it'll be.
Espada or Bard would by my two top choices.

If they go with Ross...if he's been the guy they've been grooming and planning on this whole time, I wonder if they'll even do a bunch of interviews or just hire the guy?

No harm in interviewing other candidates and looking at every option. I think the Cubs are going to interview a few people in the next couple weeks.
I mean David Ross isn't some hot commodity that might sign somewhere else -- he's either going to be the next Cubs manager or continue his work for ESPN/being a special assistant for the Cubs.

Definitely won't be horsefeathering Girardi.
The case people are trying to make for Girardi is that he's basically the opposite of Maddon in terms of handling players, "playing the game the right way" and all that old school crap that people think is somehow important. I can't see Theo going that route.
I also don't see him hiring Ross right after Maddon. It would be pretty risky bringing in a guy with zero experience to replace the guy that won the WS. People will definitely have second thoughts about getting rid of Maddon if the team starts slowly next year or doesn't return to the playoffs.

Experience costs money. There's basically no chance they don't go cheap with the manager.

Re: Cubs Manager Search
Feels like Loretta is so much the archetype of recent managerial trends that they'd have to actively dislike him once seeing him up close to not consider him the favorite right now.
