I still long for the donging leviathan Javy we were expecting when he was in the minors, but this iteration of Javy is much more fun... And sustainable. Maybe this early power surge is him finally applying that power to the game he's developed. Probably not, but it'd be pretty nice.

Pirates veterans preach to young players: Be yourselves

“The most important thing is, let the young guys be themselves, let them speak, let them be a little more open,” Cervelli, 32, said. “That’s the only way they can learn faster. If we want to win, everybody has to adjust and put it together.

I'm starting to hate the PIrates and I'm pretty ok with it. The Brewers and Cards are horsefeathering boring right now.

Eh, if you combine this year and last he's got 27 home runs in 555 PAs (157 games). It's not the 37 he put up between A+ and AA in 2013, but 27 would have been 5th amongst all second basemen last year (and everyone above that had at least 645 PAs). And considering he was moved off shortstop by circumstances largely outside his control, if you look at shortstops 27 would have been second behind Lindor's 33, in 723 PAs (which means Baez has him beat in HR/PA). The contact skills haven't developed enough to make him a true star, but most of what his promised has come through.

He killed him. Hurdle might be too dumb to realize it though because Joe talked for more than 10 seconds, didn’t use stupid baseball platitudes and articulated his statement with adult words and thoughts

https://www.lockedoncubs.com/cubs/hey-c ... -the-game/

Baez and Contreras don’t play baseball the way Hurdle wants them to, because that’s just ‘not the way we do it here.’ Unfortunately, he’s not alone in that view. St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Bud Norris was even less subtle than Hurdle about his thoughts on the growing Latin American influence on Major League Baseball.

I think it’s a culture shock. This is America’s game…We’re opening this game to everyone that can play. However, if you’re going to come into our country and make our American dollars, you need to respect a game that has been here for over a hundred years…I understand you want to say it’s a cultural thing or an upbringing thing. But by the time you get to the big leagues, you better have a pretty good understanding of what this league is.

It's great until you realize he'd use the same phrase when defending Trump against his "hyper critics".

still in awe at his game-tying double last game, where he hit a ground ball to the wall and no OF were remotely close to cutting it off

I’m trying to think if I’ve ever seen a hit like that actually. That rolled like a ball hit on AstroTurf or something

Fangraphs did a story on that game and that hit. They tracked balls hit at a similar launch speed and angle and almost every other hit was a single and did not roll to the wall

Wet grass has a tendency for the ball to kinda “skip” like that instead of killing it i think. Even though you’d think it would kill it, it usually “runs” more.

There had to be some serious topspin on that, too. When it first hit the grass, it just took off. I'm not sure of the physics of everything with the wet grass. But, from that Fangraphs article looking at similarly hit balls, that data doesn't include spin. So I'm wondering if it has something to do with how quick Javy's hands are and if it had something to do with how fast the bat was, I guess, rotating or whatever as Javy's swing went through the ball.

Yeah, spin/weather pretty much has to be the reason for the difference, but whether that is hand speed or swing plane versus pitch type is up for debate.
