The parallel I draw with Javy is with Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky got a lot of credit for knowing “situational awareness.” The color commentators always said Gretzky knew where he and everyone else was on the ice. Gretzky understood the moment in time when the game could pivot on where he positioned himself and the puck. He simply understood hockey.

Javy understands baseball. IMO, his “situational awareness” is phenomenal. His bunt single in the last game against the Dodgers is his latest example: Goeddel was getting slapped around pretty good by the Cubs. Young Javy would have swung at anything in the nearest area code. Instead he lays down a beautiful bunt single. Two batters later he’s coasting home on Rizzo’s double.

Just plain smart baseball.

Ok, sure. Javy is Gretzky.

I made no comparison of the tools Gretzky had with the tools that Javy has. Only Javy’s awareness of the game and what’s going on around him. Understand now?

Aw, man; that gif cuts off WAY too soon. That's one of the funniest bits of sports hubris ever.

Unfortunately, Javy doesn't hit like he knows where the ball is going to be.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

But for real, they are both deserving but I will be bummed if Albies holds on to his lead in voting for ASG. Javy needs to start.

Contreras is now closer than Javy to starting, which seems weird.

So as far as All-Stars, Javy and Lester are locks, but is that looking like it? Maybe the catcher spot is so weak Contreras gets a nod? Morrow? Schwarber?
