Russell has played on a 3+ win pace, struggles and all. That's perfectly cromulent.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

He’s playing the right amount there for as frustrating as Russell has been he’s still plenty valuable and the margin isn’t small on defense between the two at SS. What shouldn’t be happening is Zobrist/LaStella playing over him at 2B vs RHP while Almora plays.

Russell's...OK. But Baez's freakish ascension shouldn't be stacked unfairly against Addison not living up to expectations.

Right, but I don't think Russell is keeping Javy from playing more and Russell is still valuable and plays the SS position better than Javy does.

We'd have to know what is happening in the OF with those choices

Keep them all and rotate them (or trade one for an area of need). The real answer is hope Happ and Bote can play CF and send Almora away.

Happ could, or Heyward. But who would get us more, Russell or Almora?

Not even close. Russell nets you more if you're just asking between those two. Some analytics-heavy teams love Russell for his defense.

You should ask who would get you more between Happ or Almora.

Doesn't answer the question if he should be leadoff or 3rd.

the first one, though Zobrist does have an insane split at 2B (.331/.416/.522)

I don't understand why anyone is throwing anything in the zone to him at all right now.

i feel like this is low-key like the peak of the lester being unable to throw to bases situation. no matter what the scouting report says, it’s just too weird and different to run to the next base when the pitcher is holding the ball and looking at you, or to throw every pitch like it is 0-2 regardless of the count.

But pitchers are generally able to pitch around other sluggers...with the "unintentional intentional walk". With Javy, it'd be even better because he'll be swinging at those a good amount of the time.

I mean...I'm not really complaining.

Pitchers can pitch around Harper or Trout in part because they know those players generally won't swing, and therefore won't hit, balls that are off the corner. Javy will swing at those, and can do some damage with those. Baez swings at a hell of a lot more pitches outside the zone than both guys, and actually makes contact with those pitches more frequently than Harper, while making contact at a lower rate than Trout, but not as much as you'd assume considering how much more frequently he swings. A pitcher can nibble and unintentionally walk normal guys. But if you want to unintentionally walk Javy, you really need to put some effort into it.

I feel like Javy has spit on more pitches out of the zone than in the past or maybe just completely unhittable pitches. Don’t know if that’s perception or reality. Getting himself in better counts all year. He’s had his share of Old school Javy at bats but not as often.

Career high in O-zone (outside of the zone) swing % at 48.7%, which is second in baseball (Sal Perez in first, Almora is in 8th), so probably more perception than reality. His zone swing % is way up though, at 80.4% (career 70.7%), so maybe it's more a matter of not letting good pitches go by. Third in baseball for that, behind Freeman and Albies.

Looking at pitch types, he's murdering fastballs, but he's been a plus against them for the last few years. The big change seems to be against curveballs, had never been a positive pitch for him and now he's killing those too. To your point, maybe there have been less swings on curves that bounce in front of the plate.
