I always assumed it was Maddon assuming the role of dime store therapist, planting that seed in javy's mind as way to motivate him. :dontknow:

Ive said it since he was a prospect that Javy reminds me more of the skinny lightning quick mid 90s Sammy but playing elite up the middle defense.

Even mid 90s free swinging Sammy probably had better walk rates though. But thats more than made up for with Javy's defense, baserunning and premium position.

Yeah, didn't mean it as a comparison really. Just was looking at Manny's stats and remembering how good he was and it's crazy to me that Javy is on that level overall this year.

Speaking of crazy stats, I also saw something on Twitter comparing Bryant’s first 100 or so games in 2015 to Javy’s this season. I was struck by two things:
1. Javy is just about as good as Bryant was over that stretch which is amazing
2. Bryant K-ing a lot is but a distant memory. I can’t believe he was that good and just got better.

Ah, I miss watching Ken Griffey Jr. (in his prime) hit, but what's the point in mentioning it lol. Also, Ichiro when he first came over was something else.

Manny was a great hitter, but I never felt that awe-inspired watching him hit.

WAT?

I've never had a sig in my profile so I'm a little confused? It's a good analogy I guess...

If you consider Javy's biggest plate discipline problem to be picking up sliders, those adjustments seem pretty shrewd. Clearly he's able to pick up curveball spin and punish it, and jumping on pitches less likely to be chase pitches makes it easier to find pitches he can drive.

While Javy is objectively swinging at more pitches both in and out of the strikezone, I would guess that if we had the numbers we'd find that the quality of pitches he's swinging at is a lot better. To me it seems like he's swinging at far fewer "what the horsefeathers are you doing" type pitches. He has also gotten rid of that weird quirk where he would swing at literally anything during a full count. That's resulted in far fewer noncompetitive at bats and with his bat speed that's been enough.
