At this rate, Heyward's "mental break" time off might need to be in spring training this year instead of August.

I can't envision a scenario where he gets a hit ever again

I understand the sarcasm, but at some point don't we need to be concerned? I know ST stats don't really matter, but I am worried this new/old swing isn't the change we needed. I think they should've completely revamped his swing instead of getting him to return to his old swing circa 2012-13.

I'm no swing mechanics expert, but I still don't like how he looks so far in the batter's box. The bat speed is fine, but his timing is still off. It is better than last year but...

It's pointless to read anything into spring training results at any level. They'll continue to work on hitting throughout the spring, and we'll see how things shake out when the season starts.

It's too early to tell. Changing mechanics is not going to be something that sees immediate results. The difficulty is trusting that it will get better and sticking with it until it clicks.

I haven't seen any ST games. Is Heyward grounding out weakly to second base like he's Juan Pierre?

Your timing is a little funny...and I actually almost reposted this in here in case people weren't venturing into the game threads, but he was 0 for the spring while looking pretty bad until he cranked a dong and lined an oppo double yesterday.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

Ok, those swings look solid and on point. Needed to see that.

I think his swing looks better. Granted, it still looks ugly. But I like what's going on with the upper half, particularly his hands. It's a lot quieter. His bottom half still looks really ugly. I don't think there are quite as many moving parts, like last year when his limbs were flying in every which direction. So it's not quite as ugly... maybe? But I don't see how he can derive power from this still ugly-as-hell swing, that homer notwithstanding. I guess we'll just have to see how it goes. God bless his heart for that rain delay speech.

I think or hope Heyward's Spring Training numbers are just a by-product of overhauling his swing to muscle memory and assume it's going to take some time to see better results. I know Spring Training stats are nothing we should take too seriously but with Heyward it's a little different isn't it? I think most of us wanted to see some improvement after all the talk about how hard he worked during the off season so it's tough being patient and I"m sure it' s tough on him too.

I wonder how long until the natives start getting restless on the North Side? He got a pass for the entire 2016 campaign, but I think the honeymoon might be over by May if he struggles in April, meaning looking as lost as last year. Although it might get ugly from a fan's standpoint I doubt it will effect the team too much. If Jason is strugglingagain all it means from a team perspective is Javy will probably get more time at 2B and Zobrist will see more time in RF. More Javy is always a good thing but I hope it's not a result of Heyward's struggles.

I'm not asking for a lot from Jason. Just don't look as lost at the plate as last year and we start to see some progress, just a little light at the end of the tunnel that he can turn things around. If the fans can see some progress they might give him some latitude, but if they see no progress, it could start to get a little uncomfortable.

His new stance and swing kinda sorta remind me of Bernie Williams' with the Yankees. I guess that's a good thing? Bernie Williams was excellent. I'm not supremely confident Heyward has the bat speed.

He's a notorious slow starter, isn't he? Hopefully, he doesn't get even more horsefeathers up if he starts off poor.

He needs to always do whatever it is he did here:

Actually, that also reminds me a little of Bernie Williams.

Basically Jesse talked to rival scouts, all except 1 were pessimistic about Jason's swing and most said its basically the same.

“He has an arm bar [straight arm] and he’s late,” one NL scout said. “When you’re late, everything breaks down.”

Simply put, several scouts don’t like what they’re seeing.

“When there is no tension [in his swing], it’s fine,” another NL scout said. “When it’s a muscle swing, it’s long and late.”

Others got even more technical in indicating his flaws but ultimately it sounds like there is a disconnect between what those scouts are seeing and what Maddon is observing, or perhaps neither side is necessarily wrong when you consider it's a work in progress. There have been more balls hit in the air by Heyward, so maybe it’s just a matter of perspective. Maddon is adamant about his.

We will see...

no different from what law already said

scouts have always hated his swing, and it's easy to see why. it was talked about when he signed his contract too. we're just hoping it's back to the slightly less ugly version that managed to yield an above average offensive player who plays elite defense for like 3400 PAs before last year.
