Jon Lester Appreciation Thread

Postby TomtheBombadil » Sat May 14, 2016 5:46 am

If Ross gets one, he definitely gets one. That said, this should not be a thread born of jealousy but respect. This is a pitcher who beat horsefeathering cancer and has thrown 200+ high quality innings in 8 of the past 9 seasons in a world where little baby men and their little baby arms blow up because they thwow too hawd or whatever. Bitches. To one of the last of a dying breed!

Fun facts about Lester's season so far:

- Already worth half a WAA over last season
- On pace for close to 7 WPA, already better than last year (4th in MLB this year)
- Already has 2.6 rWAR (worth 3.1 last year)
- As a Cubs pitcher his FIP is below 3
- 5:1 K:BB this year
- His 2.10 RA9 is far and away the best in his career

It was awesome when he chose the Cubs over the Red Sox and Giants.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

So this guy is worth every penny. He pitched in six games for us in the playoffs and we won five of them. He's basically been Madison Bumgarner in the playoffs, except for a longer time. Everyone wouldn't shut the hell up about his yips. Yet, he went out and threw nearly a quarter of our total playoff innings, with a 2.02 ERA. He gave us 3 innings on two days rest, throwing 55 pitches, in the biggest game in franchise history. Gutsy. Everything you'd want in an ace. And he never gets enough credit.

He is an absolute boss and I love him. Bad to the horsefeathers bone.

During a "Not For Women Only" panel discussion, former Cubs pitcher Mike Bielecki asked several players to invent a baseball catch phrase for Viagra. Theriot's ad campaign: "Viagra -- I always play hard."

He's one of those weird players where they're really, really, really, really, really good at what they do, but it's easy to just kinda take it for granted. Like, "oh, yeah, Lester went out there and pitched another awesome game, ho-hum."

I have to explain to everyone here at work why Lester didn't field the ball that Ross airmailed to first.

Not anymore. That man brought us a World Series Championship. There will be no taking any of these guys for granted.

He's been even better than I anticipated when he signed. A big money pitcher contract that actually worked out, horsefeathers yes!!!

Same. He's the template for our pitching moving forward and for the kind of FA arm to invest big years in:

- No major arm injuries
- Plus velocity
- Fastball command
- At least three pitches
- High pedigree, has basically never pitched for a non-playoff and/or serious WS contender

I only slightly resent that his appreciation thread is the smallest one, but it totally fits Lester. He keeps it up through this contract and we might be looking at one of those guys who has at least a HOF case.

I was wondering what the X factor would be in this curse-breaking series: manager (Francona), or Theo/Lester. Might just have the answer, especially if the Cubs get another WS within a few years.

And I take back all the crappy things I ever said about Lester. I just wish the guys would split their run support between him and Arrieta, rather than having to make Lester work so damn hard all the time.

I had to buy a WS champs blue alternate jersey, but what player do I get? Bryant is the easy pick (he's so damn dreamy). But I went with Jonny. . . . . dude is a gamer. First big signing by Theo. He was brought in to win the whole damn thing and he did it. . . . .I'll wear it with pride.

I've been trying to decide the same thing. I have a Rizzo home jersey, don't know who to get in the blue. Maybe Schwarber?

The fact that Contreras is going to end up his personal catcher next year (I have to assume, with his ability to do a decent Ross imitation in the holding baserunners department) should help there.

I wonder how much of some color analysts being douche canoes is frustration with not being able to play anymore?

I know a lot of you don't care for Steve Stone, but IMO he got better the farther away he was from his playing days.
