Now imagine that there were runners on base and that they got a double or triple play out of this. Why hasn't this been done more?

Like Brett, I think I'm coming around on this. Something modest probably, like mandating two infielders on each side of 2B. (Though there is the sticky question of when they're allowed to cross) But little things we can do to help encourage balls in play should all at least be on the table.

Shifting blows, I wouldn't mind if they got rid of it altogether

I am glad you have chosen this stance.

I wouldn’t give a horsefeathers if 7 guys played 2B.

I'm going to mulligan that post as a terrible take and say the exact opposite: do all the shifts

I am not in favor of rules that force teams to lower their chances of making an out on a ball in play.

The shift sucks, I’m all for restricting it if not outright banning.

Agree. How are they going to make a rule that works?

I always thought of defensive shifts in baseball similar to a defensive formation pre-snap in football. It is strategic, makes the sport more competitive, adds another predictive analytics aspect into the game. And I enjoy watching it, especially at the stadium.

Don't take away opportunities for strategy.

Agreed, but to the bolded point, I think television coverage needs to do a much better job of making the viewers aware of at least the general alignment before the ball gets put into play. The only times I get frustrated with the shift is when I think the Cubs have a base hit up the middle or through the hole or whatever and then the camera switches and there's a guy right there. Shouldn't take up too much room on the screen to show a little diamond, and you don't really have to include the outfield.
