TV Settlement

Postby David » Wed Jan 20, 2016 9:45 pm

We had a thread yesterday before the wipeout when the news broke, but details broke today.

Seems like pretty OK news for a lot of you guys

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

All of that looks excellent.

My only question: MLBTV usually auto-renews at the previous year's price, which I haven't ever opted out of. I wonder if I have to opt out of the auto-renew to get the lower price or not.

If you stick with the leaguewide package it will only cost $110 now and you will not have to opt out.

So, you still have to be a subscriber to cable/dish to be able to do the in market away team thing. Boo.

I forgot I signed up for this last year; when do they auto-renew?

Late February or so, I think - right before the first televised spring training games.

Just cancelled my auto-renewal, too. it was surprisingly easy. I keep going back and forth of whether I should get the Cubs-only package or the full package. I mean, I really ONLY watch the Cubs so I think I'll just do the one-team thing. I think I just like to have the option to watch any game (even if I never seem to).

I'd say it would be worth watching pennant race games in September but we won't have any of those.

I definitely watch enough games (West Coast games in particular after my wife has fallen asleep) that I will keep the full subscription.

Last year I signed up for the Father's Day deal for the rest of the season, so I'm banking on them doing something similar this year.

Will this affect DirecTV Extra Innings as well?

Does anyone know how much the one team package will cost? Now that the Cubs are good I think I will get it.

That's a horsefeathering ripoff, just spend the extra $30 or whatever and get the whole package.

Why would I want to watch any other baseball game than the Cubs?

I mean, you at least have the option to do it. Especially on Cubs off days, when no-hitters are happening, down the stretch for home field/WC, etc. If you can spend $84 you can spend the $120 or whatever and have the full options.

When I've had the full package, I can usually count the non-Cubs games I watched on one hand. I'll take the tank(ish) of gas.

I definitely like being able to watch all the games. I like being able to watch important games down the stretch, no hitters in progress, or just really good games. If you combine all the bits and pieces of other games I watch over the course of the season, it would probably work out to about one full non-cubs game for every two Cubs games I watch (and I watch a least a good portion of every single Cubs game that's not blacked out.

And I'm not going to lie, if a team I really don't like gets blown out or loses a game in heartbreaking fashion, I will fire up their broadcast feed and indulge in a little schadenfreude.

If the full package was two or three times more than a team package, I'd go with the latter. But for $30 more spread over the season, I'm taking all of the games.

So am I understanding correctly that this settlement is only for internet broadcasting of games?

I live a few miles south of Milwaukee. Due to MLB's absurd territories I'm blacked out of the Cubs via MLBTV. I can buy EI through my cable company and the Cubs are not blacked out on EI (unless playing the Brewers) because the cable is based out of Milwaukee which is not a Cubs blackout zone.

Does anyone know if any of these changes would help a situation like mine? I'd much prefer to save $100+ and get MLBTV instead of EI, but I don't think this helps me at all.

The easiest solution for all of you guys with blackout issues (assuming you have the bandwidth to stream) is getting MLB.tv and using a VPN site like unblock-us.com to get past the restrictions. It's like $5 a month. Worked for me last season when I cut the cord and got rid of cable.

I was certainly expecting or at least hoping it would be lower than that. 30 dollars isn't a huge savings but I doubt I would ever watch any of the other games so there is no point in me getting the full package I guess.

I know it's like double the cost, but I am a MLBEI guy all the way. If the Cubs (or Royals) aren't on I pretty much surf around other games trying to catch big moments and most of the stud's AB: Trout, Harper, Stanton, etc.

It's not easy to flip around on MLB.tv. And I would say streaming is about 95% reliable, but that 5% I don't have the patience for.

Also, MLBEI comes with MLB.tv now (including AtBat and all the audio).

But I watch a ridiculous amount of baseball even compared to most subscribers.

If it weren't for baseball I wouldn't have satellite.
