Rodon pitched well through three innings during his start in Chicago's 5-4 loss to the Orioles in Game 1 of a doubleheader Wednesday, but he needed 41 pitches during a fourth inning he would not finish. It was after that fourth when tightness Rodon had been experiencing at some level all season got him good, according to the southpaw.

so he already had tightness in his elbow and they let him go out and throw 41 pitches in one inning?

I guess. Its hard to tell just how unusual that is for pitchers. They feel tweaks and discomfort often throughout the season and just keep trucking along. Before the game today I watched a video on YouTube about Kerry's 20 K game. I was shocked to hear Kerry say that he felt pain in his elbow for the first time after he had struck out #20 and did a fist pump. He said he didn't think much of it because you feel weird aches at different points throughout the season as a pitcher. He said he kept pitching through the rest of the season, basically with a torn UCL.

Perhaps the best pitching prospect in the minors, Casey Mize pulled after 23 pitches. His last pitch 85mph. Not looking good.

We are scheduled to face him Thursday, so that’s a nice break to miss him.

Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Rich Hill will be placed on the injured list after leaving Wednesday night's start against the San Francisco Giants with left forearm discomfort, manager Dave Roberts said.

Hill is scheduled for an MRI exam on Thursday.

Hill pitched one inning, retiring the side on 15 pitches with two strikeouts. He came out to the mound to begin the second inning but was removed from the game after warming up. He was replaced by reliever Dylan Floro.

Theo and Jed just love giving away top prospects.

Oh great, so when he comes back, his fastball will kick up a few MPH. He may not know where it’s going though.

Hmmm....I'm going to take the second to appreciate how completely the FO nailed the Arrieta situation. First they bought low soon after leaving his division based on raw talent they saw play loud at times and a strong MiL and amateur track record. They were correct on his talent and got the meat of his prime, let him FA for the compensation, and then signed a slightly younger brand name modern RH ace (easy to forget that Darvish is a pitching legend already in the widest baseball world) for less money and no compensation. The one imperfection in the sequence is that Darvish didn't hit the ground running here, lately showing much better performance and even an evolving repertoire. Arrieta's badass and all for what he did with the Cubs, but that's some slick Theo stuff

Betances was going to be the top free agent reliever on the market this off season until these injuries. Now, he might not even get a contract offer until he can show he's healthy.

The Yankees seem pretty slow to go to TJ, at least they were with Tanaka though not with first rounder Matt Sauer, but also Severino's been having arm issues for a while. I wonder if he were being paid Tanaka money if he'd be having the surgery? It seems to me more young pitchers are being pushed toward TJ, including more draft prospects including more first round caliber draft prospects. Interesting stuff, dual fronts rebuild of the economics of baseball by the cabbal of owners probably with some help from their friends in the NFL and NCAA...Paul DePodesta didn't end up in the NFL by accident!

Or, you know, maybe they’re being pushed towards it because the science behind it has improved greatly over the years and the recovery/success rate is extremely high to get back to full strength and pitching again within 8-16 months. It’s the safer bet than trying any of the other rehab paths that guys have tried that usually fail and they end up needing TJ anyways and losing more time/money.

But yeah it’s more likely it is somehow a collusion tactic to hold guys back for reasons.
