Lange needs 20 good pounds on that frame. That last pitch, four seam up and away, was very well executed and set up.

Excellent.

What a weird game though. Pelicans win on one hit.

Alexander Ovalles, who hasn't played in a while for the DSL Cubs, is the PTBNL in the Hamels deal. He showed some aptitude this year

90-92 fastball for Lange, on a good day, isn't super inspiring.

I've been surprised that after all the curveball buzz, that he hasn't K'd more guys. K-rate hasn't been bad, or anything, but given how few A-ballers can hit average curves, much less excellent ones, I'd have figured he'd have a few more 9K/6IP games on days when curve was sharp.

Swarmer with 1HR and otherwise good again through 4. Passantino with 2 HR and otherwise good for 7.

Heh heh, Ademan broke up the extra-inning no-hitter to get that 1-0 win.

But during middle-or-late innings, all of the full-season teams are getting shutout.
That would be kinda uncommon if the Cubs and all four full-season teams could all get shutout on the same day!

Swarmer strictly limits any runs against to HR's! Gives up his second.
South bend messes up my all-levels-get-shut-out by scoring 2 in the 9th.
Myrtle comes through with a shutout, losing 1-0.

I heard the Cubs don't want him relying on the curveball and want him to work on his changeup. That was a key goal for him this season. Also work on fastball command, but honestly that's true for like almost every pitcher in the minor leagues.

I was really hoping the plus fastball that he showed during his freshman year at LSU would return. It's hard to see him dominating at the big league with that kind of pedestrian fastball. If he can locate it really well and pitch on the edges of the strikezone it's possible I guess.

Marquez gave up his 5th HR in 41 IP tonight but was otherwise strong.

I check Eugene for Nelson Velazquez but he’s been cold this week. Luis Vazquez really really went cold some rime ago, is still that so far tonight.

Brennen Davis is low key hitting .298 with a .431 OBP, ~16% K rate, and 6 SBs in the AZL. Coming from a 6’4” 18 YO with potential CF athleticism, and a 7 figure signing bonus this is some really promising stuff, way better than I would have thought. The plate discipline is impressive, particularly since he’s not struggling to hit for average at this level. Depending on how he finishes I may be rooting for a SB assignment to start 2019. That line’s got some similarities to Isaac Paredes’ AZL line before he added in some XBHs and got a big promotion, hopefully Davis can repeat.

Nice opposite field shot right there. I always wonder if the hitter intended to hit it like this or it just kinda happens. This one looks like he was trying to hit it to the opposite field.

This would make Maddon and Chili Davis happy for sure.

Dang. I liked what little I read about this kid. Apparently he is recovering from having a hamate bone removed. But I suppose one has to give something up when acquiring 2012 vintage Cole Hamels.

I'm not that worried about the fastball velocity. It feels like he's throwing a lot more 2-seamers now than before, and it's obviously not going to top out at as high a velocity. If there are reports that his 4-seamer is sitting there ... then I'd be a touch concerned.

It's been his 4-seam velocity for several years now. He doesn't touch any higher than that.

Not sure this is true so much as he hasn’t sat 93-96 like he may have as a freshman

Which part? There is ample evidence that he hasn't been more than 90-92 for the past 3 baseball seasons. He could have touched higher than that for a pitch or two at some point I suppose. I haven't seen a report of him hitting more than 93 since he came into the organization, and I'm guessing it was rounded up from 92.5.

Peak velocity is higher than 93 and pretty much all reports agree on that, he’s just not sitting where he sat as a freshman.

I imagine every pitcher has some deviation. If Lange was 90-92 and gets there most games, I have to assume he'd have a fluke 93 or 94 once in a while. Who cares. If 90-92 is what he pitches with on a good night, that's obviously below-average. Better have very good movement and excellent location to win with below-average velocity.

That game got his ERA below 4, so that's good.

I have serious doubts Lange hitting 93 or 94 would be seen was flukish by the pros. Looking around no one has said he hasn't hit 96 since his freshman year or anything, just not sitting 94-96.

There is not a whole lot of 22 year olds maintaining SP traits, including showing clear progress on at least two (two seam/sinker - most easily demonstrated by more groundballs and a lower HR rate as a pro this year than his last couple years in college - and anecdoally the changeup) in his first pro season, taking on the workloads he has for mostly nationally competitive teams. From that perspective, if there's a college arm who actually earned some benefit of the doubt and the right to play the development card once it's a guy as accomplished as Lange showing some new tricks. His natural tendency is 4 seam/curve north/south, looks like he's working on developing an east/west game with the sinker and change.

My guess is when he gets his weight up past Thomas Hatch's, hopefully given that he's 3+ inches taller and not thin, that velocity goes back up naturally with it. From there he didn't do anything this year to kill possibly throwing ML innings in 2020 at 24, which has been a bit of a sweet spot age for high quality long term ML SPs and probably coincidentally is about when pitchers leave that first injury nexus. Admittedly he hasn't done much on paper to really inspire my confidence, he's been mediocre across the board (though also without being bad at anything).
