Round one tonight between Cease and Vlad's kid goes to Cease with a K. Guerrero Jr. is a beast and possible problem. Cease actually struck out on the side in the first.

Heyward and Paredes hitting 1-2 for South Bend

Walking off on his own is a positive, at least.

Tseng goes 6 4 1 0 2 4.....Still just 22 years old. I'd love to hear how his stuff is looking. He's been very good this year.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

It's a shame Cease twisted his ankle because he looked better tonight than he had all season.

The fastball command was really good. The curve continued to be knee-buckling. His first 4 outs were Ks for a reason. He was painting. The runs that scored really weren't even of his doing. The lead off walk is on him, but the two hits he gave up were bloopers that landed in between everybody. They were called for up in the zone by Mineo, and Cease hit his spot. The batters swung and, despite being jammed, managed to bloop the ball out into short center in between 3 defenders... twice. Then, on yet another 0-2 count (Cease had gotten there on a 95 mph FB on the black and a wicked curve), Mineo called for another curve ball but down out of the zone to see if he could induce a chase. Cease put it right on the money, bouncing it. Mineo was ready for it and it hit square in his chest protector, but he couldn't quite keep in front of him. It only rolled away about 6 feet, but Mineo couldn't find it and the runner advanced making it 1st and 3rd. On the next pitch, Lansing executed the double steal. Mineo should've never thrown the ball to 2B, but he did and the guy on 3rd scored easily.

Cease didn't get hit hard at all. Struck out 4 in 1.2 IP and was hitting his spots better than he had all year. Let's hope his ankle is fine and he won't miss a start because he was on his game tonight.

Thanks for scouting account, Win. Very helpful. And glad to hear the report that Cease claim's it's not a big deal. Your observation that he was locating what catcher was asking for, that's encouraging, and that the hits were bloops, etc.

Thanks also for links.

Justin Steele has sequenced three decent starts, 2 earned runs over past three starts.

His overall numbers are weird, 1.6 WHIP and giving up I think a .330 BABIP or something like that.

His K/BB splits are terrible.

Obviously he doesn't have especially good stuff, needs to get by with unexceptional stuff. And traditionally he's been wild, or at least inconsistent.

But composite numbers are a mix of all games, and he's had two bad starts, one terrible; the other 6 have all been one earned run max. Has some groundball profile, so that's a good thing.

Will be interesting to see how he can progress as the season progresses, and whether he can either improve his consistency or perhaps improve his K-quality. Would be fun to see him develop into a decent prospect.

One thing to keep in mind is it was always likely Cease would get shut down this season once he hit an innings limit. He only threw 71.1 innings last year between extended spring training and Eugene (I'm guessing they want to bump him up to 100 innings this season, which would get him through July if he were healthy). A small ankle injury where he misses a little time probably allowshim a chance to finish the regular season and maybe even pitch the playoffs.

With today's outing, Javier Assad has very likely entrenched himself in the Eugene starting rotation. A native of Baja California (Mexico), Assad was signed by the Cubs as a 17-year old IFA in July 2015. He made his pro debut at Extended Spring Training last year and did very well, and then followed that with a fine rookie season in the AZL. It is probable that at least 60% of the 2017 Eugene starting rotation (Albertos, Camargo, and Assad) will be from Mexico, with fellow Mexicans Manuel Rodriguez, Faustino Carrera, and Hector Garcia each having an outside chance to make it as well (the latter three being much more likely at this point in time to be assigned to the AZL Cubs).
