Adbert Alzolay made this week's AFL Hot Sheet:

Baseball America wrote:7. Adbert Alzolay, RHP, Cubs
Team: Mesa
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: 0-0, 2.25, 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 SO, 2 BB

The Scoop: In a Cubs system thinned out due to trades of top prospects like Gleyber Torres, Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease, Alzolay has risen near the top thanks to a breakout season. With a sped-up delivery and a mid-90s fastball, Alzolay finished third in the Cubs' organization with a 2.99 ERA between high Class A Myrtle Beach and Double-A Tennessee and struck out a career-best 108 hitters. He's allowed just three hits over 10 innings (a span of five outings) in the AFL thus far, and he didn't until his first hit until his fourth appearance.

He's likely a bullpen arm, right? I mean, seems like all he's got is the fastball. None of his secondary pitches seems to be even big league average.

It would be amazing if Stinnett planted himself back on the radar.

Seeing the changes that Chris Taylor made to take him from a fringe major leaguer to a key cog in the Dodgers machine has made me more willing to buy into some guys, and reading about David Bote's changes, which seem similar to the changes Taylor made in attempting to get more loft, has me intrigued. Admittedly, never took much interest in him until this year, as always sort of viewed him just as an organizational guy, but it's back to back solid campaigns, and he's a versatile asset.

Could he perhaps follow the same path as Zambrano? I guess what I'm asking/ wondering is just how good is his fastball? If that's all he really has it must have some good late movement or hard to square up.

Adbert Alzolay is pitching in the AFL All-Star Game on MLB Network.

5-3 groundout.
Long HR to LF.
BB
Flyout to RF.
BB
K swinging.

Topped out at 97 for the K with plenty of 96s. Command was not great. Couldn't locate the curve. 1 change that did not look good.

Stuff seems pretty straight, threw a straight 87 change low and away to a lefty and spun a couple pretty weak breaking balls at 83. Notably he gave up a HR and hit 97 for a swinging K for the third out. The raw arm strength is evident but offspeeds needs work. Seemed like one of those pitchers taught to pitch to zones taking advantage of his arm strength and velocity, control way over command.

Obviously a tremendously small sample size, but Alzolay looks like a reliever.

Gameday has him 93-94 with the fastball, including striking out Acuna on 3 pitches.

Alzolay piece in BA:

Baseball America wrote:“We were kind of waiting for him to take that step," said Jason McLeod, the senior vice president who oversees scouting and player development. “He was that guy who you would go in and watch and be like: 'Man, why isn't he dominating these hitters?' Especially when he was in the Midwest League. But this year, he took that step."

“The velocity ticked up—he was pitching at 94 (mph) and touching 97—but (what stood out was) just the aggressiveness with his fastball," McLeod said. “It was almost like he had a presence to him: 'I'm just going to come out and attack hitters.'

“He was throwing all of his pitches with intent, confident with all of them, showing a plus curveball, showing a plus changeup and he's always had that work ethic. I think the mound presence caught up to the work ethic this year . . . It was a lot of fun watching him."

President of baseball operations Theo Epstein expects Alzolay to begin 2018, when he will be 23, back at Tennessee and then work his way up to Triple-A Iowa.

“(He) is a really interesting, high-ceiling starting pitcher who, if he reaches his potential, will some day be one of five (starters), and closer to (No.) 1 than 5," Epstein said. “He's an exciting young kid with high character and electric stuff who's got a great starter kit.”

I trust our braintrust (after all, only thing I've ever seriously critiqued as that Ryan Flaherty waiver back in the day to sign Jeff Bianchi temporarily) ... but ... uh ... plus fastball, plus curve, plus change? I'll believe it when I see it. We're talking about an elite pitcher in the making if Adbert is that good. Granted, McLeod did couch it with the term "showing", but still ... 3 plus pitches, even "showing"/"flashing" it (I mean, Duane Underwood "showed" plus secondaries in A ball) ... dunno if I'm gonna buy that just yet.

Feel like Stinnett might be able to make himself into a pen arm if the velocity is there and he's getting sink on the ball like he was back in college. Like a poor man's Derek Lowe.

When Derek Johnson persuaded the Cubs to draft Stinnett, Johnson envisioned Stinnett as a potential great control guy. Kind of a Hendricks with velocity.

That control/command has never developed, at least not with any consistency. If solid control did somehow emerge at this stage in his career, he might still have a shot to be an anti-awful yo-yo guy. Sometimes with pitchers, it can take a while, and somewhat-useful relievers can emerge unexpectedly and late.

But throwing a couple 93-94's when well rested, won't go far without improved command.

This sounds like something the Braves Org would say about a pitcher that they were trying to trade.

Whatup
Adbert Alzolay (sp?) - what his long term potential?
Eric A Longenhagen
Chance to be a mid-rotation starter. 93-96, was 95-97 in Fall Stars game. Has two viable secondaries. I'm a fan
