Oh boy. Matt Gomber, 2014 4th round pick for the Cardinals, dominates the I-Cubs today. 16 Ks, no walks. Iowa finishes with 17 Ks and no walks on the day losing 3-0 to Memphis.

Austin Gomber*

And despite this outing, he's still not anything worth noting.

Total side note first - Two years later, I still hate Jumbo Shrimp as a minor league team name.

Mekkes looks like he's shaping up as a very nice pen option for the near future. Keep forgetting that he's a huge guy, and I think the staff is plenty good for the MLB pen (what low-mid 90's fastball, decent slider). I'm a little surprised he got left of mlbpipeline's list of our top 30 ... we're going 30 deep ... there's guys I'd definitely take Mekkes over, entering this year.

I'm still not enamored with Thomas Hatch as a starter two years later. Any reports on the breaking balls? Weren't there some reports of inconsistent breaking ball last year? Dunno ... I get that he's sort of revamped his arsenal in the system, so in some respects, he's still fine-tuning.

I'm very fascinated with this Jake Stinnett in the pen. Any reports on his stuff? Granted, in a better year, with a better top half of the system, this wouldn't register much. I mean, I'm getting intrigued with Mekkes/Stinnett, two guys that really profile as middle relievers.

Just awful looking at these lineups. I mean, I never expected some of these guys to reach AA. I remember when the hype on Trey Martin, supposedly within the organization, was pretty big, but there's been so few spurts that him reaching AA still surprises. I mean, Jeffrey Baez has had flashes where he showed well. I mean, that AA OF is essentially potential that never developed (here's hoping EJM/Baez has found something to make them mildly interesting, but not holding my breath) ... and the overachiever in Burks.

Gomber's pro career is going alot like I thought Kellogg's would go. He's no TOR starter but he's healthy, competent, and eats innings.

Meant to say this yesterday but I continue to be impressed by Ademan. .255/.323/.382 is solid from a 19 YO SS in High A. The early swing and miss will cool the over the top upside potential development ceiling comp I'd love to make for horsefeathers and giggles (Cano), but that was always going to be wishful thinking. It's still a pretty gd impressive track. He's in line to not get demoted *and* play most of or a full season of AA at 20 next year, which is a solid little benchmark to hit if you want to become potential a 4+ WAR kind of player without putting up loud batting lines in the minors.

Amaya's early going in the MWL is almost as impressive given that he plays the even more demanding position as a catcher.

I still have the tiniest inkling that one of these guys is a special player. Amaya's the one I heard of first so my bias is there, but Ademan's last 400 or so reps at the plate have been really impressive in some tough places to hit. That gd 2015 IFA group is doing incredibly well, there's at least three guys that "feel" like future ML players already barring disaster (Paredes and these two) and as a whole most are *still* teenagers.
