Prior to the game, LHSP Justin Steele (July 2017 TJS) threw "live" BP (two innings - 35 pitches) on Field #4 and it went very well (FB velo good and flashed a plus-CH). Next step is three innings (45 pitches), and then he will begin to throw a breaking ball.

Hoping Steele can get into a few full season games and then go to the AFL.

Erick Leal is done with his rehab and he’s up at Myrtle Beach.

Lange's throwing his changeup with success again so far tonight. I know this isn't the first start he's used the pitch aggressively along with the breaking ball this year. He came into the year with questions about a third pitch, his ability to throw strikes, and (since he was and is a flyball pitcher) whether he'd be generous with the home runs. So far I've heard good things about the changeup, he's got a 5% BB rate (19.7% K), and has yet to give up a HR. That's pleasant.

Another 5 scoreless innings for Little tonight (that's three starts in a row he's done that). Let's see if he can make it through 6 this time...

He did. 6 scoreless, 2 hits, 4 Ks, no walks on just 67 pitches (46 strikes). It would follow form for the Cubs if he's pushed into the 7th as they try to build stamina for him, especially since his pitch count is so low, but they may have other pitchers scheduled they'd like to get in the game...

Lange with 10 Ks, no walks thru 5 scoreless. He's making up for his last two starts in which he K'd 4 in 10 innings.

Nice starting pitching today, all four are still prospects... Exciting to see the 2017 1st rounders pop tonight. Probably Little's best game as a Cub.

Little keeps the pattern going of allowing 4 or 5 earned runs in a start followed by not allowing any in the next. Let's hope he breaks that pattern his next time out...

Final line: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K.

Quite the pitcher's duel as 2017 9th rounder Zach Logue also pitched 7 scoreless allowing only 1 hit, no walks with 4 Ks.

On the bright side(?), Little has not allowed a run in 17 of his last 18 innings pitched (he allowed 5 earned in that one inning, though...)

Probably the best starts of both Lange and Little’s pro careers.

When I first saw this, I thought you said GTFO, because he finally had a strong start all the way thru.

Hey, Dan Duquette! David Bote hit his 6th HR (a 2-run shot) to give the I-Cubs the lead.

Man, I have to take comfort in reading the minor league recaps cause right now the big league team sucks.

Oh hey, Bote hit another HR today. Amaya too. Nice...

Went to the Iowa/ Round rock game tonight. Cubs pitched well and Bote hit a 2 run homer.

Any velocity updates on recent Lange and Little? Sometimes I get some in April, when it's maybe cold or they haven't really gotten into a groove; but also when they aren't at all tired yet. A couple of months in now with regular rotation, I'm curious what they've got on a good night like this?

Lange: Fastball was 90-92, sometimes hit the outside corner but was more often in the dirt or well off the plate outside. Change up looked great, breaking sharply down and away from lefties. It was clocked at 82. No velo on the curve, but it is clearly his best pitch, though the change showed very well in this game. Both pitches got lots of swings and misses.

The South Bend game isn't available to watch yet (still archiving) but when it's up I'll try to watch it and relay what is said about Little's velocity.

I was just telling myself yesterday that Lange needed a game where he got a bunch of strikeouts. The talk about a swing-inducing changeup is the best news of the day. He could be a legit MOR starter if he has both plus secondaries, even if the fastball velo stays in that depressed 90-92 range.

I'm still not going to be happy about Little at all until I see some velocity readings.
