I know there were some reports on Erick Leal velo taking a jump before he got injured that were surprising to me. He was so young when they got him (and Castillo) for Tony Campana that he seems really old and irrelevant especially after being off the radar all last season, but, damn, what is going on with him?

He's still just 23 (and will be until next spring training) and is destroying the Carolina League. Is he a thing? I'll have to see if I can watch some of his games.

With Tyler Thomas getting traded for Jesse Chavez, that potentially opens a spot in South Bend for Marquez...

But seriously, are the Cubs having Andy Weber try to learn to switch hit by taking all of his AB's wrong-handed or something?

After going 2 for his last 28, King Kwon has been rightfully demoted to Mesa.

21-year-old Cuban catcher Alexander Guerra (signed for $300,000 last September) has struggled mightily. Reports were he was out of shape and looked bad behind the plate in ExST. I'll ask AZ Phil if he's slimmed down, but it looks like his bat might be returning. In his last 4 games he's walked 5 times and struck out 3 with HRs last night and tonight.

Come on, it's not that bad. <checks stat line> No, it is. It's that bad.

17 ABs, 12 Ks, 1 hit. A single.

I'm surprised we didn't make this its own thread. Every Cubs fan and poster here should care about this injury. I'm sure everyone here already knows about it, but the news still sucks.

Nico has looked great so far.

It definitely sucks, but I think it's more the cumulative effect of all the prospect and major league injuries the Cubs have dealt with this season than the severity of this one injury. Early indications are that it's not serious (he stayed in the game after injuring it, hit a HR, non-throwing arm, etc.) and the Cubs are known for being very protective of their better prospects in their acquisition year (and beyond sometimes). I'm disappointed by him being shut down but not concerned.

Chalk one more up. Not that it's a big deal, but looks like Tyler Duma was injured on a slide into 2nd tonight. Came out of the game.

Nelon Velazquez is hitting .277/.356/.538 in ~75 July PAs. Hopefully he believes in himself next year for South Bend

Man, what an exciting start. I know, premature and everything, but sometimes if you've got it you've got it.

Draft thread, there were some questions about wisdom of the two HS kids, were they overdrafts, how low is the success rate with HS hitters, why didn't they shoot for higher ceiling, disappointment that they overslotted as far as they did for Cole at the expense of perhaps signing Parker, etc..

But man, if Roederer proves to be the real thing and has reasonable HR power physically, and Nico proves to be legit too, I don't care what happens with the other 30 guys they signed.

**IF** you hit on Cole and Nico, any other value is just frosting.

Mort with a good line, 4K/3IP, single and a walk. Tiny sample, but 8K/1BB/7IP, and a 5.0 GO/AO ratio in his three outings.
Had really good numbers as a 20-year-old junior (8:1 K/BB), so he's still quite young.

I don't recall reading much if any scouting info on him in draft threat. Is his fastball super-slow, awful? Or just mediocre? He's only 6'1", so probably not any velocity projection left for him.

Probably as with all the average-if-that velocity guys from last year Abbott/Thompson/Uelman/Lange, Mort will presumably need to be proving it at every step.

But it's kind of fun to track a young pitcher until at least he does hit the wall.

Speaking of which, not-so-young pitcher Lacy had his first bad, might-he-be-hitting-his-wall game last night.

A 6-foot-1, 195-pound college performer, Mort struck out 8.31 batters per walk this spring while posting a 2.48 ERA through 105 innings in 15 starts. He has average stuff across the board and gets his fastball up to 93.

Other than the stats, I think this is the only scouting info that was posted in the draft thread re Mort.

There was also a note that he is "ultra-competitive".

Sometimes average stuff with excellent control can do OK. And I guess it's not inconceivable that a kid can add a little bit after age 20, or upon conversion to relief.

Think there's also a huge difference between guys who have 3-4 pitches but can't locate more than 1-2 if that and not even consistently, versus control/command guys who have 3-4 pitches and can locate them all. Not likely for Mort, but would love to see him do well. Kinda love the underdog story.

With 11% BB and 23% K. I remember him doing something similar last year, where he struggled a bit the first month or so, and then turned it on.

I was one of the ones that questioned the Roederer pick at the time, mostly due to him being overslot and injured his senior season, and getting drafted after another overslot prep OFer who was injured his senior season. It just seemed unwise to be putting so many of the draft eggs in that one basket. But that's why the FO has a medical staff to evaluate these injuries, and a scouting staff to watch them when these kids were healthy. They clearly saw Roederer when he was healthy, while few of the national guys were able to.
