Lange needs to have a monster K day today. And to also get back the 3-4 mph on his fastball from his Frosh year at LSU.

I don't know if that velocity from 4 years ago is going to return (it could), but if he's gonna have a monster K day, it's likely going to be because of the excellent change up he was showing earlier this season.

Don't think Lange listened today.

Additional rule: you have to have one or the other. The only exception is you have an amazing board name. davell, I'm looking at you; put up a [expletive] avatar or something if your name only sounds like somebody tried say Dave as they lapsed into a coma.

The velocity bit was tongue in cheek. It’s never coming back.

Lange has really been quite terrible of late. May as well join the rest of the preseason pitching prospects we cared about.

It would hardly be unprecedented for a healthy arm to gain velocity as a pro, particularly nowadays with more research than ever available to teams and reps on the subject.

Lange's likely feeling the grind of his first full pro summer, but yeah his season is boring and meh. Not the worst meh, certainly this board has propped up worse, but a meh on my end nonetheless. Best I can hope is that he regroups somehow by the end of the year and stays healthy.

----

Hmm...Wilson's not having a good year or anything but I now think there's room for optimism with him. Maybe it's because I saw Galindo's 2/3, checked out his season, wasn't impressed, checked Wilson's, and it was better than expected. Oh and hang in there, Jose Gutierrez!

----

Nelson Velazquez in CF for the Emeralds tonight. Get some hits too, preferably for XBs!

Oh and Miguel Amaya's really holding up well into the summer. I was curious to see if maybe the summer heat might get to him but it's the end of July and he's got a .175 IsoSLG, a dozen HRs, and a K rate some around or maybe below 20% through say maybe 380 PAs. That's some good stuff, love the relentless of his pro career so far as the guy keeps performing well. It's not common to be a 7 figure IFA catcher, I think, so that's some indication the Cubs were extremely high on him as an amateur. MB will be a tough assignment next year offensively but maybe he focuses less on over the fence power and works on his gap approach offensively hitting for average? :shrugs Talking out of my ass...Anyway, glad he's on the path to being a badass, still a long and treacherous one!

Christopher Morel has 2 doubles so far today and has really come on in the AZL. .939 OPS at this exact moment (only 42 PA).

I honestly can't think of one guy who had such a drop in velo during his college years; still didn't gain anything back after a year of professional coaching; and then went on to suddenly find that lost velocity again after 3-4 years. But then again we are dealing with a fairly rare situation in the first place. I mean, the first part alone probably limits the sample size immensely. Healthy arms don't generally lose velocity at all during a player's late teens and early 20's.

A prep player that is throwing 94 at 18, will in the vast majority of cases, still be throwing 94 as a 21 year old as long as his arm has been healthy. There have been some studies showing this. The studies were actually aimed at finding out the percentage of players that see their velocity increase from their prep years. (spoiler, actually not that many).

That's interesting. I'd be interested to see the article if you have a link. I always thought it was fairly common for a young pitcher to lose velocity.

I have some optimism for this guy. That power has played as a pro. Hopefully he’s the next guy to gain national attention with South Bend after Jimenez, Paredes, and Amaya
