Faustino Carrera gave up his 4th HR in 55+ IP this year. It was the only hit allowed over 6 with 6 Ks and a couple first inning walks. Retired 10 in a row including coming back from 3-0 for the K (curveball at 76) to probably close the outing

Nelson Velazquez singled, stole his tenth base, and eventually scored in the first

Zack Short picked up his 43rd XBH, a double. His GO/AO on the season is at .38 (career .48 in 1200+ PAs), which seems notable.

Amaya's been quiet lately but it is August and his season still offers plenty. Henderson Perez has quietly done pretty well for the AZL Cubs at C, hitting .320+ since July 8th (~105 PAs). It's punchless with lots of groundballs, but he's a teenaged catcher He and Soto seemingly offer some depth behind Amaya, both making good on AZPhil's praise during ExST.

Pitched another perfect inning last night with 2 more Ks.

4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 Ks.

Has his velocity come back? I remember him as a 94-96 guy as a starter coming up through the minors with the Dodgers, and fangraphs has his fastball at 95.3 in 2013 in a couple starts with the Red Sox. Dropped to 93.1 in 2014 and 92.7 in 2015, which is when he last pitched in the bigs. No big injury that I can see anywhere. But then again, why didn't he make an appearance somewhere in the organization until the AZL opened up until July, when he was signed in February or March? Questions for AZPhil, methinks, unless he has already mentioned this.

Get him on the 40 man and call him up in September, if the stuff is back. I think it sits at 39, but I could be wrong. If a spot is needed, a guy like Cory Mazzoni can be jettisoned with no harm done.

The 40-man is at 39 after Anthony Bass was outrighted but they might have to take Smyly or Hancock off the 60-day DL in September.

Leave Hancock on the 60 day. Give Smyly the open spot. DFA Mazzoni and add Webster. Easy peasy.

Does he have options remaining? When you put him on the 40, you'd have to option him down to the minors. I guess you could do it after 9/1 and stick him in the MLB bullpen. I'm not sure what the 40 man crunch will look like over the offseason.

I hope Hultzen will get up to AA/AAA soon, too. It would be nice to see what he's got in the tank against more advanced hitters.

Just do it on August 31st, and option down Rosario for a day. That way Webster can be on the postseason roster if he balls out in September. The long term 40 man looks fine as well, since Chavez/De La Rosa/Wilson are all FAs and only Justin Steele needs to be protected in the Rule 5. Hamels is a FA too, but I'm not totally convinced the Cubs don't pick up his option at this point.

Can't you still add anyone in the organization on 8/31 to the playoff rotation if there's someone on the 60-day DL?
